Do you know about this rule of what NOT to do during an emergency on an airplane?

Flying Southwest
While you’re in preparation for your next trip to Walt Disney World, you might want to be aware of what you shouldn’t do in case of an emergency (which hopefully never happens)!
According to Business Insider, an American Airlines jet recently caught fire shortly after landing at the Denver airport. Everyone seemed to have evacuated just fine, with 12 of the 172 passengers on board getting sent to the hospital with minor injuries. A photo caught the evacuated passengers standing on the wing of the plane, with their bags in their hands.

They might not have been aware at the time — but they were breaking one of the MOST important safety rules! Flight attendants explain before take-off that carry-ons MUST be left behind in the event of an emergency. This is to make sure of a quick evacuation process. It is a federal regulation that everyone must evacuate a plane during an emergency in 90 seconds.

Geoffrey Thomas, an aviation expert, previously stated to Business Insider, “You’ve got to get all the passengers out in 90 seconds. Now, we’re seeing evacuations taking six and seven minutes because passengers insist on taking their bags.”

Be safe when traveling
It has been proven that attempting to get your bag when evacuating, can be life-or-death in certain situations. According to Business Insider, a Russian airliner crash-landed and caught fire in Moscow, killing 41 of the 78 passengers and crew, in 2019. Many of the survivors were seen with their bags in hand, which aviation experts believe stalled evacuation.

Luggage
On the flip side, when a Japan Airlines jetliner collided with a smaller plane on the Tokyo runway, all 379 (5 times more than that of the Russian plane) survived. Aviation experts believe part of the reason was because passengers ditched their luggage.

When you take your next trip to Disney World, make sure you remember this rule, as it can be life saving during an emergency. Yes, it can be hard to leave all those Disney essentials, goodies, and merchandise! But, life is more important!
