The National Hurricane Center has reported that Hurricane Gabrielle has rapidly intensified into a major hurricane (Category 3 or higher).
Gabrielle is currently about 195 miles southwest of Bermuda, moving north-northwest at 10 miles per hour.
Hurricane Gabrielle’s sustained winds have increased to near 120 mph, which officially makes it a Category 3 hurricane. The estimated minimum central pressure of the storm is 957 mb. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles.
The storm is expected to continue its north-northwest track throughout Monday, followed by an increased northeastward or east-northeastward motion on Tuesday. The center of Hurricane Gabrielle is expected to pass east of Bermuda on Monday night.
While the storm could intensify more today, it is expected to begin weakening on Wednesday.
Currently, no coastal watches or warnings are in effect for the U.S. However, those in Bermuda should monitor the progress of the storm as it could bring hazardous surf and rip currents to the beaches. Additionally, parts of North Carolina and the Eastern Coast could see similar impacts.
The NHC is also monitoring two other areas of concern in the Atlantic. A tropical wave in the Central Tropical Atlantic is producing limited showers and thunderstorms west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. A tropical depression could form by the middle to latter part of this week while it moves west-northwestward to northwestward across the Central Atlantic.
This system has a 20% chance of development over the next 48 hours and a 70% chance of development over the next week.
Additionally, a tropical wave located east of the Lesser Antilles is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. The system is expected to slow down and turn northwestward, to the north of Hispaniola. Gusty winds and showers are expected for portions of the Leeward Islands late Monday night and Tuesday.
This system has a 10% chance of development over the next 48 hours and a 40% chance of development over the next week.
We’ll continue to monitor these systems and let you know if they — or any others — are expected to impact your vacation. In the meantime, make sure you stay tuned to the Disney Food Blog for the latest Disney and travel news.
