Spirit Airlines filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2024 and later filed for bankruptcy a second time.
As a result, the company has undergone numerous changes and restructuring, including the elimination of routes from several cities — and it’s happening soon. Here’s what you need to know.
Florida-based Spirit Airlines previously confirmed that it would be cutting routes to and from 12 cities throughout the United States. These changes begin on October 2nd, so make sure you make other travel plans if you typically fly Spirit to any of these cities.
The 12 cities that will be impacted are:
- Albuquerque, NM
- Birmingham, AL
- Boise, ID
- Chattanooga, TN
- Oakland, CA
- Columbia, SC
- Portland, OR
- Sacramento, CA
- Salt Lake City, UT
- San Diego, CA
- San Jose, CA
The company also confirmed it would cancel plans to launch service in Macon, GA, which was set to start on October 16th. In an email statement, the company wrote: “We apologize to our Guests for any inconvenience this may cause and will reach out to those with affected reservations to notify them of their options, including a refund.”
Spirit is trying to cut costs by eliminating the routes that don’t bring in the most money. Recently, the company claimed it had “substantial doubt” about staying in business, citing less demand for leisure travel as well as “adverse market conditions.”
United Airlines and Frontier Airlines have recently scooped up some of the routes that Spirit is dropping.
