Flying today can be stressful, but this one change is making it a little easier!

TSA lines at MCO
Between flight delays, long lines, and TSA rules, it can feel like a marathon every time you head to the airport. For years, one of the biggest hassles has been navigating TSA checkpoints: shoes off, laptops out, liquids in tiny bags… You know the drill. But just when we’d all gotten used to the ritual, TSA has shaken things up in a big way with a policy shift that’s set to make travel just a little bit easier for everyone.
If you’ve flown recently, you’ve probably noticed something different at security. That’s because the TSA just made a huge change: the mandatory shoe removal rule is officially gone. No, you’re not still dreaming, passengers now can keep their shoes on when going through standard security screening at U.S. airports.

Check out the NEW rules!
This shift, announced by Homeland Security on July 8, 2025, marks the end of a nearly 20-year policy born in 2011. The logic? Advances in screening technology and layered security methods now allow footwear to be scanned effectively without needing to be removed. For years, only TSA PreCheck travelers could leave shoes on, and now that perk has expanded to almost everyone.

MCO Airport
Of course, there are still caveats. Homeland Security was clear that while the blanket rule is lifted, TSA officers retain discretion to ask someone to remove their shoes if additional screening is needed. Also, the policy is for domestic U.S. airports and applies to regular security lanes. So if your shoes trigger an alert or there’s something unusual in your screening, you might still have to remove them.
