The Carousel of Progress is currently closed in Magic Kingdom as it goes through a major refurbishment.
It closed in early July with plans to open in 2027, but Disney just filed a new permit that gives us a bit of an idea of the work going on behind the scenes.
A permit was filed for “general construction” at the Carousel of Progress, under Walt Disney Imagineering. This is one of the many permits that have been filed for the space, likely with more to come, but this shows that even though it closed only a few weeks ago, Disney is ready to get to work and start the project.
Each scene is being completely redone to represent new decades. The first act will be set in the 1960s, starting with the 1969 moon landing. The second act will be the 1980s, where Sarah is showing off her latest kitchen appliances and gadgets.
The third act is the new millennium, and you get to join New Year’s Eve 1999 with the whole family. The final, fourth act will showcase a possible future where a beautiful tomorrow is just a dream away.
Disney World’s first Walt Disney animatronic is also being added, along with an introduction scene. We saw the first Walt Disney animatronic over in Disneyland, and we’re SO excited to finally have one on the East Coast.
D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event starts on August 14th and is usually where Disney announces new projects and gives us updates on current ones. While they announced this project in May along with some concept art, we hope to hear a little bit more about it at D23. We’ll likely hear about other projects in Magic Kingdom, like Piston Peak and Villains Land, too. There will likely be so much more that we’re not expecting, too.
Make sure you keep following Disney Food Blog for more Disney news. We’ve been keeping a close eye on the project for any updates, and with D23 around the corner, we’ll be bringing you the latest Disney news right here at DFB.

I hope that Disney will make an official video of the original experience available. I am sure there are lots of good fan videos out there, but the original story deserves to have an official Disney salute to the original vignettes. But I am glad that CoP is getting a refresh and will continue to live on, and wasn’t destroyed or sitting unused for years. It is a space that not only tells great stories and holds many memories, but it provides an essential spot to cool off and rest in Tomorrowland.
