Magic Kingdom’s Carousel of Progress closed on Jul7 6th for what will be the ride’s biggest update since it opened in 1975. The new version of the ride will include a Walt Disney animatronic, as well as all new scenes, meaning that most of the classic ride is set to change.

Disney is currently hard at work on making those updates, and we just got a sign that things are going forward as expected because Disney just filed a new permit for the ride.

We already knew that a Walt Disney Animatronic would be coming to the ride, but Disney shared that even more updates are on the way for this iconic attraction. Each scene will be completely overhauled to feature new decades — and we’ll even get a glimpse into the future! The ride is set to close on July 6th so Disney can make way for these changes, and we’re celebrating the last day of the original Carousel of Progress.
It’s been a BIG year for Magic Kingdom. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopened as new and improved versions of themselves. Cinderella Castle got repainted. Now another big change is coming to the park!

The Carousel of Progress is getting a massive makeover, which means we need to say goodbye to the version we know and love. We’re here on the last day of operation for the current Carousel of Progress, and we’re not the only ones who came out to say farewell.
We are not kidding when we say EVERYTHING is changing in Disney World because it seriously is! We’re talking new lands, new rides, new areas….EVERYTHING. Even Disney World hotels are making big changes (and yes, we’re still a little sad about the Grand Floridian gingerbread house situation).

We recently saw big updates made to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, but ANOTHER Magic Kingdom ride is getting a massive update soon, and it’s a classic one: Carousel of Progress. Now, BIG changes are coming to this attraction, but will those changes include something a little…extra?

Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress has been operating in one form or another since its debut at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. The animatronic stage show initially followed a family through the technological advancements of the early 1900s through the mid-1900s, ending in a 1960s-vision of the near future. Following the Fair, the show was moved to Disneyland for about a decade before being shipped back across the country to Walt Disney World.
Many Disney fans have mixed feelings about Carousel of Progress in Magic Kingdom getting a large overhaul with all-new scenes, but it’s still happening, whether we like it or not.

In fact, the project has just taken another step forward. The current version of the ride will close on July 6th to be transformed, which is certainly coming up fast. It looks like Disney may be ready to begin working on the new version right away, because a new permit was just filed.

Over in Frontierland, Piston Peak is coming to life behind tall walls (though hop on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure or Big Thunder Mountain Railroad for a great look at what’s going on), and Villains Land is currently being built from the ground up behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. However, it was recently announced that ANOTHER big project is beginning in just one month, and it’ll change one attraction for good — this is your reminder that you’ve only got ONE more month to experience the current version of Carousel of Progress!
