It’s summer, which means A LOT of families are taking vacations! School is out, the sun is out, and everyone just needs that break from work. There are an endless number of destinations to choose from — a weekend trip nearby, a tropical vacation on an island, a week-long stay at a theme park, a cruise — the list goes on and on!
But what a lot of people don’t realize is there could be a barrier, even if you already had the trip booked in advance. Travel advisories are common to ensure every traveler’s safety, and one was recently issued for The Bahamas.
On July 28th, 2026, the U.S. Department of State issued a Level 2 Travel Advisory for The Bahamas. A Level 2 Travel Advisory simply means “exercise increased caution.” The advisory was issued due to an increasing amount of crime in the area.
From the advisory, there has been an increased number of crimes, including armed robberies, burglaries, and sexual assaults. Most of these crimes occur in Nassau and Freeport on New Providence and Grand Bahama Islands. It’s also stated to be extremely cautious in the “Over the Hill” area in Nassau due to residents being killed by gangs.
The advisory also has information about jet skis, boating, and licenses, beach safety, and weapons and ammunition. It has been revealed that sexual assault has been committed by jet ski operators and on and near downtown Nassau beaches. Police also strictly enforce laws regarding firearms and ammunition, including small quantities in carry-on bags or luggage. Travelers carrying anything illegal can face arrest, jail time, and fines.
If you decide to travel to The Bahamas, the U.S. Department of State has provided some steps you can take to ensure your safety:
- Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to get important updates and alerts from the U.S. embassy or consulate
- Review information on Crime Abroad and for Victims of Crime
- Review the Country Security Report
- Do not answer your door at your hotel or residence unless you know who it is
- Lock doors and windows and use other security features, especially on balcony doors
- Do not physically resist any robbery attempt
- Always check your personal belongings
- Follow local laws
- Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website for the latest Travel Health Information
- Whether you’re a first-time or frequent traveler, use the International Travel Checklist
- Purchase travel insurance
We’ll keep you updated if anything from this travel advisory changes.
