If you’ve ever stood in the Florida sun at Disney World in July, sweat pooling in places you didn’t know could sweat, you already know the lengths guests will go to for a few extra degrees of relief.
We’ve tried the cooling towels, the misting fans, the frozen water bottles pressed against our necks. But we never thought we’d strap a literal turbine to our waistband and walk around the parks with it running on high — until we tried this!
Get this waist fan and stay cooler!
The AMKEN Waist Fan is a compact, rechargeable, wearable cooling fan — the kind of product that looks a little more “jobsite” than “theme park.” It clips to a belt or waistband, comes with its own belt if your clothes can’t support the weight, and includes a lanyard so you can wear it around your neck instead. It has three speed settings, a built-in LED flashlight with a flashing hazard mode, and charges via USB-C or standard USB. Our reporter went in expecting to hate this thing. But that skepticism didn’t last long: “I was nervous at first about wearing something around my waist, but it’s kind of become my friend now. I like having it with me, I feel safe with it, and I think it’s great.”
This isn’t a dainty handheld fan that gives you a light breeze — it’s built for people who overheat easily and want serious airflow, even if that means carrying a little extra weight to get it. Where it really shined was indoors, layered on top of the park’s own air conditioning. Propped up on a tray at Tomorrowland Terrace, it “amplified the air conditioning beautifully — almost too much,” to the point that one spot on the stomach got almost too cold. At Cosmic Ray’s, where the A/C is “good but not great,” pointing the fan straight at the face made a noticeable difference.
One of the best things about this fan is that there isn’t just one “correct” way to wear it. Our reporter tried it clipped to their shorts (worked perfectly), clipped to a belt (fit fine, though they noted anyone bigger than an XL–2XL range might be pushing the sizing limit), and worn lanyard-style around the neck (this one didn’t work as well — with the intake covered by a shirt, it didn’t pull enough air). The trick, they found, was keeping the intake exposed, even discovering they could clip a T-shirt to the fan itself to keep the bottom vent clear.
No product is perfect, and this one comes with two honest trade-offs. The first is noise — it’s not deafening, but it does run constantly, and over a long day that hum can start to wear on you. The second is weight, which our reporter didn’t personally mind but flagged as a possible dealbreaker for smaller guests. As they put it: “That’s the trade-off: you get this incredible cooling power, but you have to accept sounding like you’re walking around with a vacuum cleaner in your shirt.”
Our reporter gave the AMKEN Waist Fan 4 out of 5 stars, docking a point only for the noise. Everything else — the cooling power, the versatility, the surprisingly sturdy build — won them over completely. They’d buy it again without hesitation, and they’d gift it too, not just to Disney-bound friends but to anyone who struggles with heat.
