It’s not too difficult to find construction in Disney World.
Whether teams are building something new, changing something old, or just keeping things in working order; construction is a pretty common occurrence in The Most Magical Place on Earth. We’ve heard a lot of news about resort hotel construction recently and we’re wondering: What’s next for Disney World Resort hotels?
Recently, we got a little bit more news on the major refurbishment at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. This was (of course) super interesting, but we also spotted some interesting language in the update.
A section at the end noted, “This exciting progress is part of the overall evolution of our Disney Resort hotels, as we infuse even more Disney touches across our collection – just in time for ‘The World’s Most Magical Celebration,’ beginning Oct. 1, 2021, in honor of Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary.”
Well, that anecdote got us thinking about the future of Disney World Resort hotels and what we can expect. Could we see MORE refurbishments that add “Disney touches” in the next few months? Maybe. But let’s take a look at some of the changes we DO know about.
Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort Refurbishment
As we mentioned, Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort is getting a major refurbishment to the Great Ceremonial House lobby building, monorail station, pool area, and more. This work is to update and touch-up one of the TWO opening day Disney World Resorts. That’s a pretty big deal.
The Great Ceremonial House is getting several improvements including a dramatic overhaul to the porte cochere in the front that will turn it into a high-pitch, open-truss roof covered in a thatched style with pops of color. Nearby, the monorail station will receive new wooden screens with tropical colors.
On top of that, ALL of the guest rooms are being refurbished with a new Moana-influenced theme.
We recently got a peek at what these newly reworked rooms look like and the new design definitely speaks to the Polynesian vibes — just add some of your favorite characters from Moana!

Disney’s Contemporary Resort Refurbishment
Disney’s Contemporary Resort is getting a round of room refurbishments too! In January, we noticed that some availability was limited for the Contemporary, so we reached out to a Cast Member who let us know that the Main Tower Guest Rooms will be under refurbishment from April through September.
Disney released an announcement for this refurbishment on the Disney World website, but we still don’t know too many details.
It could be a chance for Disney to get everything back in the same shape it was originally or it could be something more. Perhaps the Contemporary rooms will get a similar treatment to the ones over at the Polynesian? Only time will tell!
We’re not too sure what the case is but we’ll be keeping a close eye on news about Disney’s Contemporary!

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort Refurbishment
Recently, Disney also announced that change is coming to Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. A group of hotel rooms will be converted into Disney Vacation Club Villas!
In Big Pine Key (Building 9), 200 rooms will be refurbished into Resort Studios, tripling this hotel’s DVC offerings. The work is set to kick off in spring 2022, with these reimagined rooms opening in summer 2022.
Disney hasn’t released any more details about this project, but we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop as we learn more. One thing you will want to be aware of is a lessened availability of “normal” rooms at the Grand Floridian once construction begins.

These major announced refurbishments aren’t the only ones either. We’ve spotted touch-ups on other resort hotels around Disney property as well.
Most notably, we recently spotted that the character art was removed, refurbished, and replaced at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort. We’ve also spotted some work being done over at Disney’s Pop Century Resort. Select lobbies have received new furniture as well.

It seems that Disney is focused on touching up all sorts of areas around Disney World in the months leading up to Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary in October. We’re excited to see the finished products, and we’ll be sure to let you know if we spot any more refurbishments or if any more are announced! Stay tuned!
