We are having an EXCITING afternoon!
Disney Parks Experiences and Products Chairman Josh D’Amaro just announced the official opening date for the Avengers Campus land in Disney California Adventure as June 4th. But, Star Wars fans got a little bit of an exciting nod too… .
Today, D’Amaro wrapped up a media event (The one where Avengers Campus got its opening date!) by leaving some final thoughts from Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. To show his excitement for the future of experiences at the Disney parks, he lifted his hand to reveal a lightsaber hilt.
Then, get this, he TURNED IT ON. The light blade of the sword extended from the hilt, just like in the movies. D’Amaro then noted, “It’s real.” 😳 REAL!!!!!! It left us STUNNED…shook to our core, people.
Up to this point, replica lightsabers consist of a hilt piece and a non-collapsible blade piece. The blade has to be attached to the hilt, so there’s no cool lightsaber extension moment like you see in the films.
Until now, apparently. D’Amaro’s lightsaber extended from the hilt, seemingly as a beam of light — JUST LIKE IN THE STAR WARS MOVIES.
Unfortunately, we don’t know too much else about this crazy new technology. Is it safe for consumers? Will it be more of a show element? How does it work? GIVE US THE DEETS, DISNEY.
Does this mean that something new is coming to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge? Maybe our souvenir, replica lightsabers are about to get a MAJOR upgrade?! Or maybe we’ll get to spot a whole new show experience with our favorite and not-so-favorite characters!
Or could the real lightsaber be part of the Star Wars Hotel? We know they have the technology to let us use the Force, will we be using real lightsabers too in their lightsaber training experience? Like this photo of a lightsaver looks pretty realistic.
We were able to see this mysterious real lightsaber during an exclusive event, where photos cannot be taken or shared. But when and if Disney shares those photos, we will be sure to give you a look! You can bet we’ll be keeping a close eye out for more news of the REAL LIGHTSABER we just saw. Honesty…we still can’t process it. A REAL LIGHTSABER?!

Ok… take a few chill pills and relax.
First off, it can’t be a “real” light saber because that’s not only not a thing – real physics won’t let it be real. It would require confining photons into a controlled space using some kind of force (not the Force) and to put it simply: photons don’t work that way.
The only alternatives are light emitting gas – but again, it has to be contained in some way and either excited by an electrical current or by heat (plasma)… and neither of those will give you a lightsaber where the ‘blade’ is just empty space – they both need a form of containment.
BTW, if Disney has figured out how to do ANY of those – they just solved the world’s energy problem AND global warming, because that would give us workable fusion power.
So, all of that is a long way to say “It’s a trap!” – I mean “It’s a trick!” and when we see it up close it’s going to be a little like a magician’s trick where they saw a person in half and you say “It’s impossible – it has to be magic!” and then find out it’s a rigged table and there are two people hidden in it.
I wish this were real, however, the physics of the known universe does not allow for a lightsabre to exist. even if we had the technology. At best you’d have to create a forcefield to contain the energy. This would take more power than we can currently produce. Keep looking up.
Imma need a video please.
All the people getting down on you for this not being a “real” lightsaber, I got you. I know what you mean. This is a “real” lightsaber to those of us fans in the “real” world and it sounds awesome! I can’t wait to see this!
