Disney World will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary SOON and so many changes are coming to the parks as part of the festivities.
Over at EPCOT, Spaceship Earth is getting a new nighttime look with lights that will make this park icon sparkle and shine. We’ve seen some concept art and even gotten a peek at the new lights that will be placed on Spaceship Earth, BUT today we finally got to see the new lights in person!!
As we walked through EPCOT today we took a look at the grand and miraculous Spaceship Earth building and tried to see if we could spot some of the lights that are set to be installed on this icon. We didn’t spot any in the front of Spaceship Earth, so we walked around and BAM! On the back of Spaceship Earth we saw some of the lights!!
See them? No? Okay, yeah, they are QUITE difficult to see from this far away.
So, allow us to do some zooming in for you! Better? If you look closely you’ll see some lights have been installed at some of the points where the Spaceship Earth panels cross.
Here’s an even closer picture! See them now?! We counted about 12 or so on that back part of Spaceship Earth that appear to have already been installed. You can see the lights and then that one spot in the bottom right corner that doesn’t have anything installed on it.
Imagineer Zach Riddley previously shared that the Imagineering team had been testing the lights before moving forward with installation. He had also noted that they would be starting the installation at the top of Spaceship Earth and working their way down from there. So, it seems things are moving along.
The lights will actually shine out in different colors on the front AND they will connect across the sides, shining across all of the different faces of Spaceship Earth to create a connected look, like a starry sky.

These lights will transform Spaceship Earth into a “Beacon of Magic.”
And while other Disney World park icons will also get a bit of a makeover for the 50th, Spaceship Earth’s new nighttime look will actually be a PERMANENT addition!
So, while these lights may be tough to see from far away, it sounds like they’ll be making a BIG impact once they’re all installed and ready to go. We’ll keep an eye out for more details about the 50th Anniversary and these new Spaceship Earth lights. Stay tuned for all the latest updates.
