Disney has been releasing a variety of live-action remakes of classic films for several years now!
Disney’s live-action Aladdin film premiered back in 2019 and plans for a sequel were announced in 2020. Since then, many Aladdin fans have been waiting and wondering what’s going on with the sequel, and now we finally have a bit of an update.
Mena Massoud, who played Aladdin in the live-action film, sat down for an interview with Variety about his holiday film, Hotel for the Holidays, and he had a few things to say about the Aladdin sequel.
When asked if he had any updates about the sequel, Massoud said, “I don’t know that there is movement. There was a change with the writers, and they are working on a brand new draft. That’s all I know.”
He continued, “If Aladdin 2 happens, that’s fantastic. I think it should happen. Dan Lin and Jonathon Eirich of Rideback Productions, who did the Lego movies and Aladdin, want to make sure they get this right.” Lin and Eirich served as producers for Aladdin.
But if the sequel does happen, don’t expect it to be anything like the 1994 animated sequel, The Return of Jafar. Massoud said, “So if we do see Aladdin 2, it’s not going to be based off the animated version at all. This is going to be a brand new original story.” We wonder what direction they might take the story!
That’s all the news we have about Aladdin 2 so far! Stay tuned to DFB for more Disney news and updates!
