What’s blue and purple and controversial all over?
You guessed it, it’s the Genie+ skip-the-line service in the Disney World app! Disney World visitors have had some mixed feelings about this service, but regardless of how you feel about it, you may still want to buy and use it. And now that the price is uncapped and subject to surges, there are some key things to keep in mind. On April 4th, 2023, we saw Genie+ sell out FAST in Disney World despite a record-breaking price increase. And now we’ve got another key update.
If you thought the $35 price and early sell-out of Genie+ from April 4th was a one-time occurrence, you’d be WRONG. Genie+ was priced at $35 AGAIN on April 5th and sold out AGAIN not long after 10AM ET. Wow!
This price surge and early sellout could be caused by numerous factors. TRON Lightcycle / Run officially opened yesterday, which might be bringing big crowds to the parks. TRON itself is NOT available through the standard Genie+ service, but instead through Individual Lightning Lane, but crowds in Disney World that may have arrived for the ride’s opening could also be purchasing standard Genie+ to skip other ride lines.
Plus, spring break season is upon us, EPCOT’s International Flower and Garden Festival is well underway, and people may have been flocking in to say goodbye to the 50th Anniversary Celebration or to see the return of the Happily Ever After fireworks.
The strange thing is that despite the sellout, on the morning of April 5th park pass reservations were still available for EVERY Disney World park. It’s entirely possible that Disney is simply more strictly limiting the amount of Genie+ purchases available to try and better distribute crowds throughout the lines in the parks.
So, what do you do if you’re heading to Disney World soon and want to use Genie+? Our key tip is that you’ll want to be up EARLY to score your purchase of the service. You can purchase Genie+ as early as 12AM (midnight) on the day of your visit, but keep in mind that you won’t be able to schedule your first Lightning Lane with the service until 7AM. The earlier you purchase the service, the greater the chance you have of being able to buy it before it sells out.
