Buckle up, y’all — we’ve got BIG NEWS!
On August 9th, stakeholders and Disney fans — the team here at DFB included — tuned in to the company’s Q3 earnings call to check out the details on the Walt Disney Company’s successes and shortcomings during the third quarter of fiscal year 2023. The quarter was filled with a few gains and losses, some of which took place within Disney+ — the company’s streaming platform. And now, cracking down on password sharing could be Disney’s answer.
In Q3, Disney+ saw an overall increase in subscribers compared to the same quarter last year, as well as an increase in revenue per subscriber. Now, Disney CEO Bob Iger says that the company is trying to determine strategies for pricing, marketing, and content, to “reset the whole business around economics.”
Further, Iger said that the company is attempting to rationalize the volume of content they produce while also improving user experience and economics — which is no easy task. The company is trying to unify streaming platforms (Disney+, ESPN, and Hulu) to a one-app experience, beginning domestically.
That said, Iger announced that a new ad-free bundled subscription plan would be available in the United States on September 6th. He also said that the company is actively looking into ways to address account sharing — as in password sharing. Iger confirmed that the company was actively updating subscription agreements.
So, it’s possible that Disney might soon crack down on password sharing and make it impossible to be logged in on too many devices at once. When we find out more about this, we’ll be the first to let you know!
