Southwest Airlines at the Orlando Airport

However, if you’re holding off your trip until 2025 and you’re planning to fly with Southwest Airlines, you need to know about the new plane design on the way.
Southwest has unveiled the new seats that will be on their new aircrafts coming in 2025! The reviews are in and they’re…mixed.

And as you can see from the comments on this post, some travelers are NOT having it! One commenter (Kyle) said, “What I’m seeing is rockhard seats.” Another (Katie) posted, “Why not just put wooden benches in? They’d be just as comfy…”
Many commenters on this TikTok are not fans (to say the least) of the way the seats all touch, like bench seating. Not to mention that the back of the seats look like they wouldn’t support your back at all.

According to USA Today, while the seats will have USB-A and USB-C plugs, there are still no normal outlets.
It’s not all bad news, thought! The new seats feature holders for your personal electronic devices (that can be charged through the plugs).

And larger overhead bins are also coming to these new planes and will also be added to the airline’s Max 8 and Boeing 737-800 planes in the coming years. It sounds like that means more space for everyone’s carry-ons!

These changes are a little controversial, to say the least, but we’re going to have to wait and see how they are for ourselves when they launch in 2025.

I’ve flown with Southwest to Orlando on max 800 series. They are NOT comfortable. Southwest is not the airline they used to be and just seem to be constantly shooting themselves in the foot every time they turn around! Been flying them since 1979 when they were a regional airline and Herb was still in charge. 9/11, of course, changed air travel but since then, Southwest has grown and seems to want to join the ‘big’ airlines and have been making really bad decisions and taking away everything that made them great and had passengers in love with them. They really should subscribe to the philosophy: If it ain’t broke…don’t fix it! Stay with the 737-700 we all love, are comfortable and have proven to be reliable!
We are going to withold judgement until we try these new seats. We like the idea of larger overhead bins. We have been flying SW since 1981, also back when Herb K was in charge. Herb was a leader that put customer satisfaction at the front of every key decision. We loved flying SW back then. Reservations not really required for most flights back in the day. They had ticket kiosks in Houston Hobby and Dallas Love (our usual commute) and you just walked up and bought a ticket and got on the plane. The flight was $25 one way after 7 pm. SW has done a very good job of continue to hire on attitude first. We still like SW and consider it our primary airline. We only fly other airlines when we have schedule issues. I should note that back then, Delta was the premier domestic carrier. Their Red Jacket service was the industry best.
No matter which airline I fly, I always bring a sciatica cushion (sold on Amazon, of course). You wouldn’t believe how cushiony and comfortable it makes the airline seat. When not in use, I put the cushion in a nylon shopping bag and bungee it to my carryon rolling suitcase. Wouldn’t travel without it. Also used it last year on a long train ride.
A couple of inches off the seats equate to adding a few extra rows, more revenue. I was a dedicated SWA flyer, A-List Preferred, until the couple of melt downs which cost my wife and me an addition $3,500. After submitting request for refund and SWA refusing to pay, never looked back and currently premier gold with United. Yeah, they have faults too, BUT have provided exceptional service and refunds.
Those seats look anything but comfortable.
I’ve always traveled SWA and enjoyed it. I agree that the seats don’t look comfortable, but could there be a good reason for them? For example, they could be much easier to sanitize (pandemics) and they could prevent the spread of bedbugs which, unfortunately, are back on the rise again, in different areas and countries. You really have to think about all of the possible reason for things.
