Disney often tells us about new shows and movies in the works, which gets us all excited to see them someday.
But there’s a problem. Some of these shows we’re told to look forward to are filmed in their entirety…and then never see the light of day. Why? Because streaming services like Disney+ decide not to air them.
Ever since Bob Iger took back over being CEO of The Walt Disney Company, he’s been focusing heavily on cost-cutting measures. A lot of that is focused on streaming, which unfortunately means things like this will likely continue to happen as Disney tries to save money.
This is the fate that befell the series Nautilus, which was a prequel to Jules Verne’s film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The show “promised to tell the early story of Captain Nemo as he embarked on an epic submarine adventure, seeking revenge on his former captors the East India Company,” according to The Guardian. The production hired hundreds of crew members and extras, built a replica of a submarine, and was expected to be a hit, but Disney+ has chosen not to air it despite the show being complete.
But they already spent the money, right? What does not allowing it to air help? Well, part of this cost-cutting exercise by Disney meant cutting $1.5 BILLION worth of content, which means the company’s value falls and they don’t have to pay as many taxes. Additionally, large streaming services started to remove popular titles from their libraries many months ago for the same reasons.
Not only is this frustrating to consumers who were excited for shows like Nautilus, but the hundreds of people who worked on these productions will never be able to have their hard work appreciated by the masses, or it won’t be immortalized the way streaming services make shows and films seem like they will be.
