Move over, Mickey! We’ve got big news for Disney+ fans, and there’s already a BIG Hollywood name involved in the project.
But first, let’s rewind. We’ve heard a lot about the future of Disney+ recently, like when Mufasa will land on Disney+, what’s happening with the Princess and the Frog TV series, and what’s next for the Descendants series. Phew — there’s a lot going on! Oh, and now, Disney is even working on an Oswald the Lucky Rabbit series!
It’s true! Deadline has just reported that Jon Favreau is working on a new TV series starring none other than Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Recognize that name? Favreau created, wrote, and executive produced The Mandalorian, and executive produced The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
The series will be a combination of live-action and animation and will star the “saucy, self-absorbed bunny.” While the project is from Walt Disney Studios, Favreau is writing and producing it.
The history between Disney and Oswald is complicated, as he was created in 1927 by Walt Disney and was featured in 27 animated shorts, but Universal took control of the character in 1928. But, hey, losing Oswald is what led Disney to create a new character, the one we all know and love today — Mickey Mouse.
The Walt Disney Company acquired the trademark for Oswald in 2006, and he hit the public domain in 2023. We’re excited to see where this new series could lead, and will be sure to tell you all about it as we hear more!
