Delta passengers were left stranded on an island in the Atlantic Ocean overnight.

A flight going from Madrid to New York was forced to land on the small island of Terceira, Azores, after the plane experienced engine issues during the flight. The flight held 295 people on board.
Delta Air Flight 127 had to make an emergency landing after the Airbus A330 experienced engine problems. According to NBC News, the forced landing led to a more than 31-hour delay for those on the flight.

The airline released a statement connected to the incident saying the flight had to “divert to Lajes, Azores (TER) after indication of a mechanical issue with an engine.” Of the 295 people on board, 282 were customers and 13 were crew members.

Those on board were able to leave the plane via the stairs once they landed. The airline provided hotels and meals to those impacted during the unexpected pause in their travel. The flight left Madrid on Sunday, July 6th, before the incident. Passengers and crew were able to leave the island in a new plane on Monday, July 7th.

The company said, “The flight landed safely, and we sincerely apologize to our customers for their experience and delay in their travels.” The flight was initially supposed to land at 3 PM on Sunday, July 6th. Passengers finally made it to JFK Airport at 10:36 PM on Monday, July 7th, according to FlightAware.
