This is going to be a HUGE year for change in Disney World, including Magic Kingdom. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is getting updated, while Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is getting a MASSIVE makeover. Construction has already started on the new Cars expansion in Frontierland, as well as on Villains Land, which will be going behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
Cinderella Castle will also be changing soon, too: Disney previously announced that it would be getting a brand-new color scheme and that painting would begin soon, as in this month.
That’s right. If you’re visiting Magic Kingdom this month, you may be faced with some construction walls, scrims, and other things around Cinderella Castle while it gets repainted. This means that your Cinderella Castle photos might be a little different until the new paint job is complete.
Once completed, though, Cinderella Castle will revert to its more blue and silver look, and it looks like all the pink tones will be completely gone (those colors were added just before Disney World’s big 50th Anniversary Celebration). The good news is that Disney has shared that the scaffolding will be lowered by noon each day, so you’ll still have the chance to get some good castle pictures on your trip!
If you’re curious how Disney repaints such a massive structure, we got a little insight back when it was painted to its current color scheme. Believe it or not, it’s a paint-by-number situation in that Disney assigns different numbers to the “bricks” of the castle so it knows which colors go where. Here’s a close-up of those numbers and how they were used when the castle was previously painted. Cool, right?
As far as how long the painting will take, well, we have no idea. Much of the previous painting job was done when Disney World closed in 2020. However, we don’t anticipate any such closures this year, which could mean the process will take a little more time. We’ll be keeping an eye on the castle while it’s being painted, though, so be sure to follow us for updates.
