There are Disney movies that receive new merchandise approximately every eleven minutes. Then there is The Rescuers Down Under. Released in 1990, this wildly underrated Disney adventure gave us Bernard, Miss Bianca, Jake, Cody, Marahute, Wilbur, and one deeply misunderstood goanna (Nope, that’s not a typo. A goanna is a species of lizard found in Australia) with a dangerous appetite for eggs. Yes, we are talking about Joanna.
Fortunately, Loungefly has remembered that The Rescuers Down Under exists. Several bags inspired by the movie are currently available through Amazon, including backpacks featuring Bernard, Miss Bianca, Jake, and other residents of the Australian Outback.
Joanna has spent decades being treated like a villain when she was clearly an overworked assistant trapped in a toxic workplace with inadequate snacks. She does not get nearly enough Disney merchandise, and we have questions for the people in charge. Joanna may still be waiting for her solo collection, but this is progress.
Loungefly Disney The Rescuers Down Under Mini Backpack
This The Rescuers Down Under Mini Backpack looks like it was designed for the Disney fan who remembers renting the movie on VHS and then immediately attempting to communicate with local wildlife. Jake appears front and center on the exterior pocket, while Bernard and Miss Bianca are pictured above him. Additional animal characters appear on the side pockets, giving you several little details to inspect while waiting in a Disney World security line.
It is colorful without being overwhelming, a smaller size without looking like a preschool backpack, and obscure enough to attract approving nods from fellow Disney adults. In other words, it is a useful way to identify your people. This would be a fun park bag for Animal Kingdom, especially if you enjoy coordinating your accessories with the general theme of animals, conservation, and birds who could absolutely carry a small child through the sky.
Loungefly Disney The Rescuers Down Under Embroidered Mini Backpack – BoxLunch Exclusive
This BoxLunch Exclusive Disney The Rescuers Down Under Backpack makes a bold entrance, practically stomping in with hiking boots and declaring your deep appreciation for Disney’s more underrated animated films. The embroidery gives the bag a more polished, collectible feel than a standard printed backpack. It also has a slightly roomier shape, which is good news for anyone carrying a portable charger, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, sunglasses, three emergency snacks, and the deeply seeded resentment that Disney still has not built a Joanna meet-and-greet.
The earthy colors make this backpack especially wearable for fall, but it could easily work year-round. It would look right at home in Animal Kingdom, Disney Springs, or on the back of someone calmly explaining why The Rescuers Down Under deserves more attention than it received.
Loungefly Disney The Rescuers Down Under Crossbody Bag
Frank fans, your moment has arrived. This Disney Loungefly The Rescuers Down Under Round Crossbody Bag is shaped around Frank — the frantic frill-necked lizard who spends much of the movie trying to escape McLeach’s collection of captive animals. His neck frill extends beyond the body of the bag, creating a dimensional effect that is exactly the kind of wonderfully unnecessary detail we expect from Loungefly. Bernard and Miss Bianca appear as debossed designs behind him, and the back includes additional detailing with the silhouette of an albatross.
A crossbody can be a great option when you want something smaller than a backpack but still need enough room for your phone, wallet, keys, and one snack you swear you are saving for later. Frank is an especially fun choice for Disney adults who want character merchandise that is not instantly recognizable to every person standing near them. This bag rewards the fans who know. Everyone else may simply wonder why you are carrying a panicked Australian lizard.
These bags are nostalgic, delightfully specific, and different from the designs you see during every trip through the parks. Now we simply need Loungefly to finish the job — give Joanna her own bag, give her an egg-shaped coin purse, and give her a backpack with a movable jaw and a lining covered in stolen eggs. We have waited long enough.
Be sure to check Amazon for the latest prices and availability, since both can change at any time. And keep following Disney Food Blog for more Disney merchandise, Amazon finds, and important discussions about unfairly overlooked animated reptiles.
