Snack Series: “Ice Cream Sundae” Cupcake at Main Street Bakery

Many of you know I just got back home TODAY from a trip to Walt Disney World! And while I was there I explored LOTS of new eats and treats to share with you.

But before I start tackling laundry, I couldn’t wait to showcase this little beauty…

Main Street Bakery's Ice Cream Sundae Cupcake

I know what you’re thinking — “Gosh, that looks an awful lot like a scoop of ice cream on top of a cupcake.” Yep — it sure does! But that, my friends, is a big ol’ ice cream scoop’s worth of FROSTING…yes indeed. Let’s take a closer look:

Ice Cream Sundae Cupcakes Lined Up

When I first walked into the Bakery (which I always do, because I want to see what fun new stuff they have), my eye was immediately drawn to these. All lined up in white and pink, they truly did look like ice cream sundaes sitting there — drenched in “chocolate sauce” and topped with “whipped cream” and a cherry. The whole thing is topped off by a chocolate coated triangle of waffle cone. Totally adorable, and completely irresistible.

I started to dismantle the cupcake so that I could show you guys what the textures were, and I was surprised to see that the chocolate on top just lifts right off of the fluffy frosting.

And the frosting — buttercream — was vanilla, even though it was pink. The texture was lighter than a typical buttercream, but you can see from the photos that it definitely had some heft to it. This was no whipped cream frosting, I promise. It was also super-sweet, so the sugar really came through.

And this is a LOT of frosting, my friends. I spoke to a cast member about it and she said that they literally used a regulation ice cream scoop to plop it on there.

Frosting Texture was light, but still a solid buttercream

The cake itself was red velvet! Not very memorable (unlike a Sunshine Seasons cupcake I’ll be sharing with you soon!), this cake was slightly dry and definitely overpowered by the frosting. There was also no “surprise” in the middle (something I’m finding less and less in Disney cupcakes recently, by the way).

You can also see from the photo below that the frosting was definitely hefty, as the cake pulled away from it all together when I did the cross section.

Overall, I really enjoyed both the whimsical presentation of this cupcake, and the flavors and textures in the snack. I’ve become very impressed with Main Street Bakery lately — they’re giving Starring Rolls a run for their money, eh? ;-)

What do you think about this “ice cream sundae” cupcake? Let us know in the comments if you’d be willing to give it a try!

Oh my! I’m moving to Orlando to work in Disney in two weeks and I think I’ll have to make a goal of trying every Disney cupcake. Though I will say red velvet is not my favorite- I have a bit of an identity crisis with it. It has cocoa powder but it’s not chocolate, though not vanilla either. What is it really?! If there’s going to be cocoa powder in it, I say go for chocolate :)

I am getting really concerned by the lack of a “surprise” in the middle of Disney cupcakes these days. Can we please start a campaign to reverse this troubling trend?

  3. Amy says

While this cupcake looks delicious, I am really intrigued by this “memorable” Sunshine Seasons cupcake of which you speak. I’ll be checking back regularly for more details–I love some cupcake suspense!

What kind of surprise is supposed to be inside these cupcakes?
If it’s the extra frosting, that wouldn’t really work with the scoop shape on top unless they discarded the cutouts (or sold them separately as cupcake holes).

NotChris – Disney often (used to?) put special fillings in the cupcakes. They have a special procedure. If it can work for the mountain of frosting on the Butterfinger Cupcake I’m sure they could have done it here!

I believe all the major Starring Rolls cupcakes, most of the major Contempo Cafe cupcakes, and a bunch of others have (used to have?) fillings inside.

It looks awesome, but I’m only feeling “meh” about it overall. I guess I was hoping that it was some kind of cherry or raspberry frosting with a chocolate cake…

  7. JT says

First of all, totally jealous of Julie up there moving to Orlando to work in the promised land.

Secondly, AJ, what are you doing to me?? They are going to have to roll me out of there between that cupcake and the ice cream cookie sandwich.

  8. says

This cupcake looks more presentation over substance to me. Sure it’s totally cute, but unless you are a major buttercreme frosting fanatic, I don’t think it’s going to be a great snack. I’d rather have real ice cream instead. I also can’t wait to hear about the sunshine seasons cupcake!!!

  9. Dorothy says

I’ll take two, please-one in each color. After all, I have to be able to tell everyone which is better.

  10. says

That is a serious cupcake! Have you seen any gluten free cupcake offerings in the “World”? I know that there is the storefront at Downtown Disney, but I don’t recall seeing cupcakes (gluten free) for sale in the parks?
The cupcakes don’t pull me over as quick as the beautiful candy apples all over the place! Those are just stunning. I have yet to find one that is Dairy free (my teeth probably thank Disney for that!)

  11. David says

We head out in 28 days, and i believe me and son are going to do the cupcake crawl! He loves looking at the pics of all the cupcakes, so it will be something fun to do!

  12. Essie says

This cupcake is just adorable, but since the ‘cupcake transporter’ I’m constructing will only hold 6-8 of the little treasures, I’m not sure if this little cutie will make the cut to fly home with me. I’ve lost a lot of weight and thanks to the ‘Disney Food blog’ and your cupcake articles I’m afraid that I’m going to find a lot of it (the lost weight) during my trip to WDW this year. LOL

  13. Galloping Gourmand says

Hm. Looks good but I’m disappointed by what you say about it in the review. That should be strawberry. A great, original presentation but a lack of creativity in the favors. I’m glad that the favors they did choose we’re done well.
