Review: New Items (and a Classic) at Kringla Bakeri og Kafe in Epcot’s Norway Pavilion

We are checking out some new finds — and taking a look at an old favorite! — at Kringla Bakeri og Kafe.

This quaint (read: tiny) spot in Epcot’s Norway Pavilion has a big cult following for interesting pastries and sandwiches. And it’s a great spot to try something a little out of the ordinary on your Drink Around the World stroll — Aquavit!

But today, we’re a sampling a few sweet treats that are new to us, plus one snack that we absolutely can’t visit Kringla without getting! Three guesses? ;-)

Let’s take a closer look.

Frozen Bundt Cake

Our first item is another entry into the wildly popular Frozen food team! It’s a Frozen-themed Bundt Cake.

You’d have to imagine that Elsa and Anna had a hand in putting this one together, since they both love chocolate. (Smart women that they are.)

It doesn’t look all that spectacular, does it? Just rich, Dark Chocolate Cake, Blue Icing, Coarse Sugar for a little crunch, and a Frozen Souvenir Ring in the shape of a snowflake.

But it’s ah-MA-zing! I was shocked. I left it to eat until last as I thought it would be forgettable. But it super wasn’t. In fact, I still haven’t forgotten about it, and hope it’s there when I go back to Disney World next!

Just look at the dense, decadent cake! You actually don’t need frosting. (Whaaaa? Did I just say that??) It’s almost like a cross between a cake and fudge. So good!

Brown Goat Cheese Waffle

The next new treat I tried was the Brown Goat Cheese Waffle. I love Cheese, and I love the Waffles here at Kringla. So hey, why not?

The waffle is filled and topped with a traditional Norwegian Cheese called Ekte Geitost. It’s a type of Brunost, or “Brown Cheese” made from goat’s milk. The cheese is produced by boiling together milk, cream, and whey, until the sugars caramelize, giving the cheese its distinctive brown color and sweet flavor. See? You learned something today!

Here’s my Brown Goat Cheese Waffle, freshly made. You can see the Goat Cheese on top and between the layers of warm, just-from-the-iron Waffle.

And, you know…kudos to Kringla for bringing another traditional dish to the bakery. These kinds of authentic experiences are what keep us noshing our way around the World!

But, well, I didn’t love this. It’s just not a flavor profile I enjoy. I get the (somewhat) sweetness of the cheese, but I was overwhelmed by the strong flavor.

I think that I’ll stick with ordering the Waffle with Jam. I really love that version.


Next up was a dessert simply called S’more. It was sort of like a Parfait made with Mousse. It looked pretty good, and all the flavors of Milk Chocolate, Marshmallow, and Graham Crackers were there…

But I found the texture to be a little strange. The middle was more liquid than mousse, which somehow just didn’t really compute with me.

It was fine once, but I don’t think it will become a favorite for me.

And of Course…School Bread!

Because — this! Nothing that I’ve tried here has come close to knocking School Bread out of its number one spot! (Well, except that weird Frozen bundt cake. That was just awesome.)

The slightly sweet Yeast Bun, flavored with Cardamom, is filled and topped with a simple Vanilla Custard. Toasted Coconut sprinkled on top of the Icing Garnish completes the picture.

    OK, I am always a sucker for the Carlsberg.
    Aquavit I remember from a Tony Bourdain show on Norway so always recognized it but never took the plunge, and the 10 buck price tag for a shot may be the reason….but maybe it’s time!!

    Yeah I think I’m the only one not a fan of school bread. Sorry A.J. To me it’s always been dry and the cardamom is just too much for me. My favorite is the almond pretzel. :) I love the heart shaped pretzels but I don’t think I’ll be trying the new one. Thanks for the review!

    I normally do not like custard, but I keep seeing rave reviews about the Schoolbread. Do you think I would like it if I do not like custard in donuts? (That’s what Schoolbread looks like to me…)

    I personally don’t think you will like it. Think dry custard donut with coconut and very much spiced. But you ever know! You have got to try it once at least.

    I have to say school bread does not appeal to me at all either. I can’t bring myself to even order it to try. I’m not a huge fan of cardamom and I don’t like custard filled pastry at all. I like the rice cream and lefse though.

    I love the savory items there the most though.

    We were waiting in the almost laughable line to meet Anna and Elsa in January and my husband jumped off the line to get a snack. I smelled the waffle cooking and when he came back we devoured the caramelized goat cheese waffle. We loved it. Maybe because it was fresh and hot, but it made the wait very enjoyable.

    I had a fairly recent Epcot trip with my uncle before the summer, and we decided to have our lunch here. Now, if I’m with my mother, she wouldn’t even think of going anywhere Scandinavian, due to her seafood allergies and her fear of touching it, but she wasn’t with us this time and I love Norwegian culture, so the choice was made. The sandwiches were fine, although my uncle wasn’t impressed. It was the desserts that won us over, and wow, do these look interesting.

    Next time, I’ll probably try something else for lunch, but a dessert trip will definitely be in the cards.

    I just love this little bakery; I’ve had all kinds of goods things to eat from here, from full QS meals to treats and snacks. I think the Frozen treat looks good and I’d like to try that interesting S’mores snack, also. However, can you believe that I’ve never yet tried the School Bread?!?!

    I don’t care for the school bread at all – like Venessa said, it’s much too dry. I love love love the rullekake!!!!!! It’s a must every time I set foot in EPCOT!

    Yeah Geitost is an acquired taste. Normally one has to grow up eating it to love it. (Like Peanut Butter for Americans or Vegemite for Aussies.) I was at a cheese tasting class where my friends compared it to a pencil eraser, but I loved it & took their left-overs. So I’m really looking forward to trying the waffles on my next trip.

    Venessa, you are not alone in your dislike of School Bread. But for me it’s a hatred of the mouth-feel of coconut that keeps me away. Thus I’ll leave those for others… not like I’m lacking in other choices. ;-)

    Know Ekte Geitosl very well, brown soap, is more of a description of the taste of it.. My husbands’ family, grandpas’ side are from Norway. Can’t wait until 10\28, when we down there for Food and Wine Festival.
