Even though it may be a while before we get to experience it, today Disney revealed some new details about the retheme of Splash Mountain in Disney World and Disneyland Resort.
The ride’s makeover was announced last year, but not much has been shared since. Today, we got new concept art and more details about what’s going to be included in the new attraction!
This morning, Disney shared a roundtable discussion about the ride along with new artwork depicting some of the scenes. First, we got a glimpse at Tiana and Naveen boating through the bayou — and the princess is wearing pants! (That’s a pretty big deal for the timeframe in which the ride/movie is set.)
But we also got to see an original painting by Sharika Mahdi, the artist who was hired to create artwork that will inspire the Imagineers working on the attraction. Her painting depicts the ride’s final scene, described as a “Mardi Gras party!” It’s likely that this scene will be located after the big drop, where the characters on the riverboat are located in Splash Mountain currently.
We don’t yet have a timeframe for when this transformation will happen, but we know that we’ll be getting some new characters in the ride and that the ride will be “connecting who Tiana was in the movie to who she will be in the future.” (She has a new series coming to Disney+ soon as well!}
