For the past several years, Disney has been in the business of doing live-action remakes of their classic films.
So far, we’ve seen everything from The Lion King to Beauty and the Beast to Aladdin get made over, and up next is another film from the Disney Renaissance — The Little Mermaid. The new adaptation stars Halle Bailey as Ariel and recently, the star shared some inside thoughts on the film!
According to Variety, filming for the movie required Bailey to be in the water for 13 hours straight on some days. “I pushed myself as far as I’ve ever pushed myself in life,” the actress said about the strenuous schedule.
Bailey also shared that the live-action version of the movie puts a more contemporary spin on the storyline. “I’m really excited for my version of the film because we’ve definitely changed that perspective of just her wanting to leave the ocean for a boy,” Bailey said. “It’s way bigger than that. It’s about herself, her purpose, her freedom, her life, and what she wants.”
“As women we are amazing, we are independent, we are modern, we are everything and above,” she added. “And I’m glad that Disney is updating some of those themes.” The new version of the movie also stars Jonah Hauer-King, Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, and Noma Dumezweni. It will open in theaters on May 26th, 2023.
