When planning a cruise that offers breathtaking natural vistas, Alaska often comes to mind! After all, taking in the sights of pristine glaciers is truly a sight to see!
However, an Alaskan cruise does offer some planning challenges during the short April to September sailing season. Another concern is choosing a cruise line that sails to Alaska.
To protect the delicate balance of nature and animals by minimizing disturbances and pollution, Alaska has limitations on the number of ships and cruise lines that can sail their waters.
To visit the majestic glaciers of Glacier Park, only two ships per day are permitted to carry passengers to this region in Alaska. This agreement is in effect until at least 2030. Currently, the cruise lines granted permission to sail here are:
- Carnival Cruise Line
- Holland America
- Princess Cruises
- Norwegian Cruise Line
- Royal Caribbean
- Seabourn
- Uncruise Adventures
- Viking Ocean
- Disney Cruise Line
- and a few others.
Typically, you’ll be booking a cruise on a smaller ship when sailing to Alaska. Ships with a gross tonnage of 150,000 or greater are unable to dock at certain ports. And, certain fjords and passageways are completely inaccessible to some of the larger ships.
