The U.S. Department of State has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for the Dominican Republic.
A Level 2 travel advisory warns to “Exercise Increased Caution” when traveling to destinations with this designation. In this case, the travel advisory has been issued due to crime.
The travel advisory was updated on June 18th, 2025, and states, “Violent crime is a concern in the Dominican Republic despite more police presence in areas often visited by tourists. Do not display wealth and be wary of meeting individuals from online in secluded locations.”
The warning goes on to say that if you do decide to travel to the Dominican Republic, “note that violent crime is a concern throughout the country” impacting all residents, regardless of nationality. Travelers should be extra cautious of violent crime, including robbery, homicide, and sexual assault.
Countries like Italy, Germany, and India are also currently under a Level 2 travel advisory from the U.S. Department of State.
The State Department issued these safety tips for travelers visiting the Dominican Republic and other countries under travel advisories:
- Pay attention to your surroundings.
- Do not carry or wear valuable items that will attract attention.
- Be vigilant about where your phone is and avoid using it openly on the street.
- If robbed, hand over your personal belongings without resisting.
- Travel with a partner or group if possible.
- Do not leave food or drinks unattended.
The Disney Cruise Line does travel to the Dominican Republic — Puerto Plata, specifically — though it does not appear as though there are any current itineraries that include a stop there.
