In EPCOT, there are so many different rides to experience, foods to check out, and of course, drinks to try all over World Showcase.
Drinking around the world in EPCOT is one of the most popular experiences you can have, but we’ll admit, there are some times where drinking around the pavilions is NOT the best idea. Sure, when you’ve got a big day coming up, or you’re with a younger group, it may not be a good time to get a drink from every pavilion. However, there’s another situation, in fact, a whole season, where drinking isn’t recommended — when it’s HOT.
Extreme heat can trigger heat-related illnesses, especially in kids and seniors, as well as those with chronic health conditions, according to the Centers for Disease Control. This can include things like intense sweating, muscle cramps, dizziness, and nausea. Extreme heat causes over 700 deaths annually in the United States, which is why it’s important to know that heat-related alerts have now been issued for 18 states for this upcoming week.
However, battling the heat isn’t just about staying hydrated or keeping yourself cool by stepping into the shade or staying inside when you can. According to Newsweek, it’s also about avoiding alcohol. Yes, drinking alcohol in higher temperatures makes things EVEN worse, and with how hot it’s going to be this upcoming week, it’s recommended people stay away from drinking in the following states:
- South Dakota
- Nebraska
- Texas
- Iowa
- Louisiana
- Alabama
- Florida
- Georgia
- North Carolina
- South Carolina
We don’t want to ruin your drinking around the world plans, but drinking + extreme heat is almost always a recipe for disaster. Both interact to increase the effects of each other on you, which can quickly lead to dehydration (as alcohol does cause you to lose fluid faster), impaired judgement, and the inability to regulate your temperature. While First Aid is available in each Disney World park, the last thing you want is to need to use their services while intoxicated as you’re also hot as can be.
If you do find yourself feeling dizzy, too hot, or unable to cool down, or like you’re going to pass out, we recommend sitting down inside immediately, and if you don’t begin to feel better in around 5 minutes, head to first aid if you feel you can make it. Otherwise, contact a nearby Cast Member to let them know what’s going on. While it may feel embarrassing, the last thing you want is to actually pass out or get sick in the middle of the park, when you could have avoided it by taking things slow and monitoring yourself closely.
