We’ve all been there – you go to watch your favorite movie, when all of a sudden, your screen looks pitch black! EEEK! (I’m looking at you, first 5 minutes of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone!”) Or even worse, you’re on the edge of your seat, but then all of the characters start whispering to each other? And then there’s background noise so loud you can’t hear them at all! (I’m sorry, “Oliver & Company,” I can’t lie anymore!) If you’re in the same boat, then Dolby has finally answered our prayers, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Dolby, the company behind Dolby Surround Sound, has announced their newest tech to help solve your TV’s biggest problems. It debuted last week at the annual electronics trade show CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas. The new tech will launch on the streaming service, Peacock, later this year, and here’s everything you need to know!
Dolby is bringing two products to Peacock. The first is Dolby Vision 2, which will brighten screens and make colors more vivid. The second is Dolby AC-4, and it’s even more customizable. Viewers can adjust sounds on a personal basis, so you could turn up Mickey’s voice while keeping Minnie’s at the same volume. While specific controls haven’t been announced yet, NBCUniversal (Peacock’s parent company) executive David Bohunek said that Dolby AC-4 will be “a very simple control in our own UI.” There are no extra apps or software involved; everything will be built into the Peacock app once it’s released.
The idea stood out to Peacock after a recent phone call with Bohunek. Peacock is one of the biggest leaders in sports streaming – they currently stream the NFL’s Sunday Night Football, college football’s Big Ten Saturday, and are the only streaming service for this year’s Super Bowl LX on February 8th, 2026. During their first streaming exclusive game, Bohunek received a call from NFL executives wasn’t working – NFL execs wanted the crowd cheering to be louder, while the Peacock team felt that the sports announcers weren’t loud enough. Peacock jumped on Dolby’s new technology because it solves a problem sportscasts face often – a focus on the pro sports commentators or the atmosphere of roaring fans.
While we don’t have a specific release date yet, we do know that this tech will come out for livestreams of Sunday Night Football, which means it will come out sometime before the Super Bowl next month. Dolby Vision and Dolby AC-4 are expected to be released for non-sports programming later this year, which means your next movie night just got so much better.
