We’re sharing the top tips we picked up from our recent trip to Universal Studios Singapore!
We’ve been doing a LOT of traveling lately, with trips to Singapore for the maiden voyage of the Disney Adventure, Disneyland Paris for the Adventure World expansion, and the fantasy-themed Efteling park in the Netherlands, all in the books! We also visited Universal Studios Singapore while we were in the neighborhood, and now we’re reporting back with the tips we learned from our experience!
Don’t Overlook Minion Land
Much like other Universal parks around the world, Universal Studios Singapore is also home to a Minion Land. But even though the rides are the same as in other parks, we’re begging you not to skip over this area! This is honestly probably the BEST version of Minion Land that we’ve seen, because everything was so detailed!
There are three rides in Minion Land — Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, Silly Swirly swing ride, and Buggie Boogie carousel — and even if you decide to bypass them, it’s still absolutely worth taking some time to explore the land itself and take in all of the details.
Leave Plenty of Time for Far Far Away
Far Far Away is the park’s Shrek-themed land, and if there’s one selling point for all of Universal Studios Singapore, this is it! This land is HUGE, and it’s incredibly detailed, just like Minion Land. One of our favorite parts of our visit was strolling through and looking for all of the Easter eggs and special touches.
Shrek 4D still lives on in Universal Studios Singapore, which is great news for any Shrek fans who still miss its presence in Universal Studios Florida! Of course, we had to ride it while we were there to pay our respects, and while we enjoyed the nostalgia of the experience, we can honestly say we understand why it closed in Orlando. The advancements in ride technology have come a long way since it debuted, but we totally get it if you want to ride it for old time’s sake!
There are several other rides and attractions in Far Far Away, too. Unfortunately, the land’s big attraction, Puss in Boots’ Giant Journey, was closed for scheduled maintenance while we were there. The other rides in the land are okay, but nothing to write home about necessarily, so we got the most out of our time there by enjoying the atmosphere of the land itself…and it was STILL one of our favorite parts of the park!
Check the Ride Closures Before You Book
This is a tip that goes for a vacation to ANY theme park in the world, not just Universal Studios Singapore, but it’s worth repeating to check the park’s website for scheduled ride closures before you book your trip! The rides are closed for routine maintenance periodically, and if there’s anything on your must-do list, you’ll want to make sure it’s open while you’re there.
We ran into this first-hand with the closure of Puss in Boots’ Giant Journey. We didn’t have much flexibility in our travel dates since we were in Singapore for a sailing on the Disney Adventure, so we weren’t able to be picky about when we visited. But if you do have a more open schedule for when you can visit, make sure the rides you’re most excited about will be up and running!
Try the Shrek Waffle
While we were in Far Far Away, we also picked up a Shrek Waffle, which is one of the park’s internet-famous treats. Snacks that play well on social media don’t always deliver in actual taste, but we can confirm that the Shrek Waffle is worth the hype!
The waffle was made fresh to order, and it came with a scoop of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream on the side. It was the perfect sweet treat we were looking for, and we’re happy to report that this trendy treat actually does translate IRL!
If The Mummy is Too Much for You, Try Treasure Hunters
Universal Studios Singapore has its own version of Revenge of the Mummy, the thrilling indoor roller coaster also found at other Universal parks. And if you’ve always wanted to experience the ride for its story, but can’t handle the intensity, you could try riding Treasure Hunters instead!
Treasure Hunters is a family-friendly ride that lets you fulfil your dreams of becoming an archaeologist in ancient Egypt. It was quite possibly the slowest-moving ride we’ve ever been on, so no worries about speed or G-force here! Even though it’s definitely not a beat-for-beat recreation, the ride does loosely follow a similar storyline as Revenge of the Mummy in a way, so it’s a super low-key alternative if there’s no chance you’re hopping on a coaster!
Choose Your Intensity on Battlestar Galactica: Human vs. Cylon
Battlestar Galactica: Human vs. Cylon is the world’s tallest dueling roller coaster, and one of the park’s headliner attractions. It’s a massive coaster, so there’s no way to completely escape the intensity, but if you’d prefer a slightly more chill experience, go for the Human side.
In comparison, the Cylon side is a suspended coaster that was more intense than its Human counterpart — which we suppose is fitting!
Experience Attractions No Longer Available at Universal Orlando
One cool part of our trip to Universal Studios Singapore was getting the chance to experience several attractions that used to also be in Universal Orlando, but have since closed. Of course, we already mentioned Shrek 4D, but Lights, Camera, Action, hosted by Steven Spielberg, was another pleasant surprise, as it might have been our favorite attraction of the day!
We were surprised by how thrilling and scary it was as someone who didn’t know what to expect, since we actually hadn’t had the chance to experience it in Orlando before it closed!
Don’t Sleep on Sesame Street
Speaking of pleasant surprises, Sesame Street Spaghetti Space Chase was another highlight of our day! It’s one of the park’s newer attractions that takes you on a space mission using the same ride system as E.T. in Universal Orlando.
We found the theming of the ride really endearing and sweet, plus it’s currently exclusive to Universal Singapore, so we’d say it’s definitely worth experiencing while you’re there!
