According to Business Insider, The Walt Disney Company is set to cut medical insurance for spouses, with other coverage options available.
Starting next year, the company will no longer offer medical insurance plans to US employees’ spouses if those spouses have jobs that provide such coverage, a Disney spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider. The employees’ other dependents won’t be impacted.
In the statement, the company said: “Like a growing number of large employers, we’re making measured adjustments to our employee benefits in response to rising healthcare costs nationwide.”
The policy change will ot apply to dental or vision benefits for workers’ spouses. Others have said that this move is highly unusual and that many companies reduce their contribution to the spouse’s coverage but do not eliminate it.
Joshua Lavine, CEO of Capital Benefits, an insurance advisory firm, said that even though the policy doesn’t affect spouses who are unemployed or have jobs that don’t provide medical insurance, it could create problems for those undergoing long-term medical treatments. “There are so many options for employers right now to make coverage available to employees that this is really the extreme, nothing-else-can-work solution. A better solution is to reduce, or if you have to eliminate, the employer contribution for spouses.”
The company has about 172,000 US employees as of September 2025, and this limit on spousal medical coverage comes as US employers’ healthcare expenses are projected to rise 9.5% next year. The Walt Disney Company isn’t the first to introduce cost-cutting measures, either. Starbucks recently announced it would no longer cover GLP-1 medications prescribed for weight loss for benefits-eligible employees starting in October, and more businesses are following their lead.
Disney is also planing to intoduce an employee stock purchase program later in 2027. In the meantime, make sure you keep following Disney Food Blog for more Disney news.
