While there are several major projects currently under construction in Disney World, including Piston Peak, Monstropolis, and Tropical Americas, there are arguably none more anticipated than Villains Land. After all, a full Magic Kingdom realm dedicated to Disney’s antagonists has been a major want of many fans since it was first rumored in the late 1990s!

Since Disney first confirmed the project and released early concept art back in 2024, the company has slowly dripped out news on the land’s design concepts, culminating in confirmation of the land’s official name — Villains Land (really) — the land’s overall story, ride themes, and other elements at the 2026 D23 Ultimate Fan Event. However, these latest looks have us wondering something about the land.
According to Disney’s newly released story synopsis for the area, Villains Land will offer an “original take” on the company’s antagonists, set in a “vast, foreboding forest.” Guests who enter will “come across a Wishing Well that’s been torn asunder. Under most circumstances, a Wishing Well would indicate pure and good energy at work, but something dark happened to this one. Once upon a time, someone made an evil wish here – a wish so evil it corrupted the stone and broke open the structure, spreading the Well’s poisoned magic throughout the forest.” This release of poisoned magic will, in turn, draw in “villains who have come here to try and claim the last of the Wishing Well’s power.”

The land will be home to two major attractions:
- A large Maleficent coaster, which will have guests come face-to-face with the Mistress of All Evil herself, as they “race through enchanted briar surrounding her frightening mountaintop fortress.”

- A dark ride featuring a cavalcade of Disney Villains in which the Magic Mirror will “magically transport [guests] into his mystical Mirror Realm to see things on the other side of the mirror. There, in his ethereal realm, [guests] will be transfixed by countless Disney Villains conjured in ways only the Magic Mirror can do. A combination of special effects and physical set pieces will bring his Mirror Realm.”

In addition to these details — and a video preview of the coaster model — Disney also had a physical model of a tree from the forest on hand at D23. Looking at their craggy and detailed dark designs, we were quite impressed… until we started thinking about what Villains Land will look like in the daytime.

After all, the land will be outdoors, so it can’t be swathed in the eternal darkness that the story synopsis or concept art suggests. Will the daytime sunlight make the land’s imposing architecture and design look less threatening? Well, perhaps Disney’s biggest competitor can give us some clarity.

Universal also has a new land themed to monstrous characters: Dark Universe. Like Villains Land, this Epic Universe area — a portal in the park’s parlance — is dedicated to the legendary film antagonists, in this case the Universal Monsters. Also, like Villains Land, Dark Universe has an in-depth backstory and an architectural style with thematic touches that (in case the name didn’t give it away) play better at night.

… or the central Well of Darkmoor, used to feed the vampires who live underneath the land, which can look somewhat muted in the day…

Evil is evil. If you enjoy this stuff, then monsters and villains….even Disney villains….will be scary and imposing even in the daylight but much more so at night. Neither ride sounds like someone with motion sickness can endure so right away wdw is weeding out guests. In a broader light (pun intended), it concerns me that so many people want to celebrate the villains in this world and in the movie world. Even Disney’s latest ship celebrates villains with heroes. In my day, we clapped for the good guys and boo’d for the bad guys. No one wanted to wear the black hat and every villain, monster and evil character always lost in the end! Most Disney movies, especially those created by Walt or Eisner, needed a villain…and some like Ursula were fun. But all were vanquished in the end, not celebrated. I think this land is a mistake when they could have been building, for instance, Mary Poppins in UK at Epcot, to celebrate fun and good! I, for one, will not purposely invite evil in by entering when it’s built. As for Epic’s ‘Dark’ land, those monsters were mainly pathetic creatures for whom we could feel sorry and I find nothing scary about the land…although I can’t enjoy any of those rides either! Motion sickness!!
Disney Villains are different from cops and robbers or cowboys and Indians villains. We love our Disney Villains and I can’t wait for the Land to open. As a child, didn’t you love/hate to be scared?
Neil Gaiman has a good line about fairy tales that I think can be applied to Villains Land. “Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten. {He paraphrased a similar thought from G.K. Chesterton.) I think we’ll be going to Villains Land to face the villains, and not many of us will lose.
Besides…no villain? No story.
My biggest apprehension with this project is the fact Disney cheaps out on so many things after they have hyped it up in the first place. Honestly Disney COULD do an amazing job by creating a 5th park which is dedicated to villains. This is just another make do add on.
The possibility that Villains Land won’t be as scary in the daylight might actually be better for families with young kids.
