There are SO many rules for traveling through an airport that it’s hard to keep track of them all!
Bag weights and size restrictions, acceptable forms of ID, and the ideal time to arrive for your flight can change from airport to airport. And don’t even get us started on TSA — shoes on or off, laptop in the bag or out, toiletries packaged HOW? It’s a confusing experience many times. But now, TSA is considering changing a major rule for select travelers.
According to ABC, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is considering letting some passengers bring bottles of water through security. The current rule is that liquids and bottles must be emptied or thrown away before security.
This move would be part of the new TSA PreCheck lanes that are being introduced soon, so it would not apply to all guests, just those with TSA PreCheck. Officials say that the lanes are going to have new technology like facial recognition, meaning you wouldn’t be required to show a boarding pass as you go through. Other new technology for these lanes includes 3D luggage and body scanners.
TSA has also reported recently that the rules and limits surrounding the size of liquids, like toiletries, may change. Currently, the limit is 3.4 oz of any liquid, and those liquids must fit in a quart-sized bag.
Another offering that TSA is currently rolling out is the Gateside Program, which allows those with TSA PreCheck to go through security and wait at the gate for their loved ones to arrive. To use this, you need to apply one to three days ahead of time and then you would have access to shopping, dining, and the airport gates past security. It’s currently available at 13 airports around the country.
ABC says that the new PreCheck lanes will take about a year to roll out, so we’ll keep an eye out for more news before then. We’ll let you know if there are more official announcements from TSA directly.
