Fellow blogger and friend Amanda Tinney, who writes Disney Every Day, came across this “extra” bar set up outside Hollywood Brown Derby during ESPN The Weekend — complete with a brand new adult bevvie created for the event — and caught it on film! Thanks, Amanda!

When you’re in the Walt Disney World theme parks as much as I am, you tend to notice when even the slightest thing is out of place. I recently attended “ESPN The Weekend” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and while making my way from the American Idol Experience towards The Animation Courtyard, I noticed something peculiar. A bar…outside of the Hollywood Brown Derby Restaurant, right on the walkway. As I moved closer, I noticed beer, along with assorted bottles of liquor….Wowza! This bar was no joke! And it was definitely not a permanent fixture.

Brown Derby Bar Outside the Restaurant

It’s not everyday that you see a bar serving mixed drinks out in the middle of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. In fact, the only chance you might ever get to see this again is during a special event. Upon further inspection of the placard on top of the bar, I noticed the S’PIN Cocktail, created especially for ESPN The Weekend no doubt.

Wanna know what the S’PIN Cocktail consists of? I took my best shot…pun intended (with my camera people…not my shot glass), so raise your glasses high Sports Fans!

ESPN The Weekend Special Event Bar Menu

How about you? Have you seen anything out of the ordinary like this at Walt Disney World? Did you attend ESPN The Weekend and try this special adult beverage? I’d love to hear about it.

Thanks, Amanda! You know I love hearing about new drinks in Disney World. I wish I could try this one!

If you’re lucky, you’ve found yourself once or twice squeezed into the fun little Rose and Crown pub in Epcot’s UK pavilion. If you’re really lucky, you’ve found yourself there with wonderful friends and a nourishing pint of Guinness. And if you’re REALLY, really lucky, you’ve found yourself a guest of Carl the Bartender — the most dynamic entertainer this side of the pond!

So, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, let’s talk about Carl the bartender and his famous balancing pint of Guinness.

I wandered into the pub one day, snapping pics as I’m wont to do in Disney World dining establishments, and Carl, who was filling a pint glass with Guinness for a guest, struck up a conversation. I quickly noticed his handiwork on the head of the pint (a lovely and ever-so-appropriate shamrock) and asked the guest if I could take a photo of his beer. He obliged, and I soon found out that Carl happens to be well known for his “Glass-Balanced-On-A-Dime” trick, which of course I needed to see!

Shamrock Design on Top of Guinness

First, Carl did his impressive trick of balancing an empty glass on a dime…

One glass...

…then he decided to top himself by balancing two glasses on dimes…

Two Glass...

…but he then grabbed the nearly full pint of Guinness and proceeded to do the following:

Guinness Glass...

Balanced Glass!

Ta-DA!!! I promise you, folks, this glass is not touching anything but the bar and the dime. That thing is completely balanced on a coin! I have no idea how he did it, and if you do, you’re welcome to share! I was duly impressed and astonished, as I’m sure most people are, by Carl’s magic trick.

But, I have to admit, I was more impressed by Carl himself. Carl is a point of pride for the Rose and Crown Pub. He’s been there for decades, and his employment has resulted in many, many “regulars” at the pub. But even if you aren’t one of his “regulars,” he’ll never treat you any differently than he does them. It seems to me that Carl pretty much considers everyone he meets to be a part of his tight-knit circle of friends…which is an amazing trait to have, and especially useful for a cast member at a place as transitional as Walt Disney World. Those of us who only get to visit once a year, or even less, love to be made to feel “at home” in our very favorite place, and Carl is a true expert at doing that.

This is surely part of why he was inducted into the tiny group of cast members who have received the coveted “Partners in Excellence Award,” an honor for which less than 2% of Disney cast members are nominated and even fewer actually win. This isn’t just any award; awardees are nominated by their colleagues and undergo a long review process. Only the most deserving get the prize — a Partners in Excellence pin depicting the Walt and Mickey statue, “Partners,” to wear on their cast member badges — and the knowledge that their colleagues have voted to recognize their exceptional work.

Carl's Partners in Excellence Award Pin

After the magic trick, we soon started chatting about Carl’s tenure at Disney, and he quickly pulled out a packet of photos from behind the bar. Carl and I started walking down memory lane, which, for him, included both alligator wrestling and decades working for Disney, where he’s no doubt delighted hundreds of thousands of guests just as he did me.

One of Carl's First Jobs in Florida

Carl's Early Days at Rose and Crown...He's the One in the Middle

Can you believe that Crocodile Dundee shot?!? Anyway, it was truly my pleasure to meet and speak with Carl, and if you find yourself in the pub sometime soon, I hope you’ll take the chance to shake his hand and thank him for being the embodiment of the “Disney Difference.” He, and other CMs like him, are the reason you and I keep spending our hard-earned cash to go back to “this happy place.”

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, everyone!

Carl, I hope you get to read this, and that a copy of this little post goes into your magical file of memories. Don’t worry about printing it; I’ll bring you one the next time I’m in town. Also, I’m really sorry if a bunch of people start to come into the pub and ask to see your alligator wrestling photo. It’s just cool, that’s all.

You’ve seen the Butterfinger Cupcake and the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcake, and the third in our “You Won’t Believe This!” Snack Series is the Marble Cupcake from Starring Rolls Cafe in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Marble Cupcake and Butterfinger Cupcake

The Marble Cupcake is one more in the line of gorgeous confections created by the Starring Rolls Cafe — and I haven’t been able to find anywhere else in Disney World! As you can see, these things are HUGE, and well worth the $3+ price tag.

This mountain of sugary goodness is made of marbled vanilla and chocolate cake topped with swirls of that same heavy vanilla frosting found piled on top of the Butterfinger Cupcake. And this isn’t your “light whipped cream” frosting, either — this stuff’s got some serious fat in it. And, in my world, fat makes a good frosting!

That delicious vanilla mountain is covered in chocolate sprinkes — tiny flakes of real chocolate (the same kind that Sprinkles Cupcakes uses). These are gourmet sprinkles that actually have TASTE.

And then, up on the tippy top, we have a dollop of that incredible chocolate frosting that’s slathered all over our friend the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcake. The texture is smoother than that of the vanilla frosting, but it’s still just as heavy and flavorful.

Finally — the Mickey Mouse sprinkles top of the whole thing, giving it color and that Disney magic! I hope you’ve enjoyed our third “You Won’t Believe This!” Snack. Have you sampled it? What did you think?

PS! This just in! StudiosCentral.com was kind enough to send over a pic of the Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ 20th Anniversary Cupcake from last May. Looks strangely familiar, don’t you think…? I love the extra chocolate hat!

It’s no secret. I love Liberty Tree Tavern. It has one of my favorite burgers, one of my favorite appetizers, and one of my favorite desserts in all of Disney World. The food is great, the service is excellent, and the atmosphere of the restaurant is delightful.

Liberty Tree Tavern

But there is a design aspect of the restaurant that is extremely compelling and that many visitors miss: each room is decorated to honor someone who was instrumental in the creation of The United States of America! The next time you head to Liberty Tree Tavern, ask your “town crier” about the particular room in which you’re being seated. Is it the one dedicated to Betsy Ross, George & Martha Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Paul Jones, or Paul Revere?

Benjamin Franklin Room

Atmosphere
Liberty Tree Tavern is located in Liberty Square in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. The building is white and columned on the outside, but full of rich Revolutionary decor on the inside. Once you’ve left your name with the front podium, you’ll wait in a huge, two-story lobby full of spindly seating, a massive cooking fireplace focal point, spice racks, and kitchen tools. Don’t forget to take a look at the themed chandelier above, and take a look around for the hidden Mickey!

Liberty Tree Tavern Lobby

Liberty Tree Tavern Hidden Mickey

Soon, one of the “town criers” will announce that a table is ready for your family: “Announcing the Smith Family of Wisconsin!” As you walk to your table, take a few moments to check out the detail of wall hangings, tables and chairs, paintings and artwork, and the styles of each room. As is the standard with Disney, everything you see has been chosen to expertly place you into the specific setting and age of the “show” you’re seeing. In this case — the late 18th century American Colonies.

The color and decor in the George and Martha Washington room are period-specific; the tri-corner hat and coat hanging next to the “front door” are what you’d see if you were dining in a noble colonist’s house; the kite on the ceiling in the Benjamin Franklin room is unmistakable.

Kite in Ben Franklin Room

John Paul Jones Room

Flag in Betsy Ross Room

Table Setting at Liberty Tree Tavern

One of my favorite window tables

My one major beef with this place is the restrooms. They’re upstairs, and incredibly small and tight. I’m not at all sure where this design came from. Also, here’s a question I have about a well-known piece of trivia: On the Keys to the Kingdom Tour, several guides tell guests that the restrooms in the Columbia Harbour House are “technically” located in Fantasyland — there was no running water in colonial times and having them in Liberty Square would be unrealistic for “show” purposes. So, where are the restrooms in Liberty Tree Tavern? Frontierland? Just askin’…

Restrooms Upstairs

Eats
As I’ve said many times, Liberty Tree Tavern is one of our “every trip” restaurants. In fact, my husband is very serious about our tradition that this is the first place we eat after we get off the plane in Orlando. It’s a consistently good restaurant — both in food quality, and service — and we’ve never had a bad meal here.

We usually visit for lunch, when the restaurant has an a la carte menu. But the evening meal — an all-you-care-to-eat, family-style menu of turkey, pork, roast beef, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, dressing, and more — is delicious as well. In fact, it’s the perfect place for Thanksgiving! (As a reminder, although Liberty Tree Tavern used to be a Character Dinner, and briefly brought the characters back earlier in 2010 during the Crystal Palace refurbishment, there are currently no characters appearing at the restaurant.)

Here are some of our favorite items from Liberty Tree Tavern:
The Tavern Fried Cheese is a favorite of ours mostly because it includes fried cheese curds. These mini-nuggets of cheese are some of the most flavorful fried treats I’ve tasted, and I’m strongly considering begging for a whole plate of them on my next trip to the Tavern.

Tavern Fried Cheese

This Clam Chowder is tied for first place with the ESPN Club on the Boardwalk!

Clam Chowda

You’ll get your drinks in these cool Tavern mugs…I have a feeling you can buy these…

Tavern Mug

The Pot Roast is a favorite of the husband’s. While the dish used to include crispy onion strands (making it about 20 bazillion times better), it still stands well as a hearty and flavorful menu item. However the loss of the onion strands might push my husband to order the burger…

Pot Roast

This burger is outstanding. I know I have fellow fans out there who can corroborate! You can get yours with the garden on top; I’m just a bacon and cheese girl. You can also order it with swiss and mushrooms — yum!

Burger with Cheddar and Bacon

We also sampled one of the newest items on the menu on a recent trip — the Chicken and Dumplings. These are MUCH spicier and more peppery than you’d imagine, and have the taste and feel of a very hearty chicken noodle soup. Perfect for a colder day in the World.

Liberty Tree Tavern Chicken and Dumplings

And dessert for us always consists of one (and sometimes two!) Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake(s). If these come frozen off of a Sysco truck, don’t tell me. I love to pretend they’re truly home made!

Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake

Now, if you’re at the Tavern for dinner, this is the heaping pile of goodies you’ll find on your table: turkey, pork loin, roast beef, veggies, mashed taters, mac and cheese, gravy, stuffing…

Salad

Entrees and Sides

And the delectable Apple Crisp (or another fruit laden dish) for dessert!

An Apple-y Dessert

As you can see, the Liberty Tree Tavern serves hearty, casual American fare, but don’t let the simplicity fool you. This is some great food, tastes home made without you having to cook it, and comes with some of the best service and greatest cast members on property.

Final Thoughts
Just a few more quick tips if you’re thinking about dining at Liberty Tree Tavern:

It’s a great place to book a dinner if you’re in the park for a special event like Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party or Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. Because you pay extra for those events, you don’t want to spend half your time eating a meal. Instead, book a meal at the Tavern at around 5:00pm. By the time the party officially begins at 7:00pm, you’ll be ready to roll!

Also, this is a great place to eat right before a parade. When you’re done, just head outside and you’re already on the parade route! However, don’t plan on watching the parade from a window table — the glass in the windows is colonial glass remember? It’s a bit warped and doesn’t give the best view.

Have you been to Liberty Tree Tavern? What are your great stories or your favorite dishes from the restaurant?

When I was a kid, I always loved to see things that were larger-than-life — remember in the 80’s when those giant, person-sized pencils and huge crayons were all the rage, and you just knew that rich people like Lisa Turtle and Webster and that kid from Silver Spoons had them in their houses?

Well, that’s what it’s like to wander through Pixar Place in Disney World these days. You’re shrunk to the size of the Toy Story characters, so everything is built on a massive scale and meticulously detailed. And right in the middle of it all — across the street from Toy Story Midway Mania — is Woody’s Hey Howdy Hey Takeaway!

You can see the Takeaway has taken over the former Studio Cafe…this is where everyone gits thar grub in th’ Ol’ West, pardner!

And below the pennant sign, the Hey Howdy Hey Takeaway Wagon sells its wares. In the morning, grab a pastry, coffee, hot cocoa, or granola bars…

Hey Howdy Hey Takeaway Wagon

…and once lunchtime hits, this is the place to get popcorn, ice cream treats, chips, or Wheezy’s Breezy Freezy (known to us new folks as “frozen coke”)!

But once you’ve got your snacks, there’s still a lot to see. Take a few minutes (send someone to get a fastpass while you’re at it!) to look around. Doesn’t it look like you’re in Andy’s Kitchen? Check out that giant Cowboy Crunchies box:

Cowboy Crunchies Front

Side of Cowboy Crunchis Box

Close Up of Cowboy Crunchies Box

And I’m pretty sure that’s Andy’s “Woody’s Roundup” thermos from his school lunchbox…

Woody's Roundup Thermos

What else would a hungry cowboy just home from school eat other than a freshly baked cookie from the Woody’s Roundup Cookie Jar?

And these are just a few of the larger-than-life props surrounding the Takeaway. Keep looking around for a bit to see an entire Toy extravaganza going on around you, from tinker toys, to scheming green army men, to jump ropes and monkeys in a barrel.

Settle onto a bench with your popcorn or frozen coke, watch your fellow guests racing to the entrance of Toy Story Midway Mania, and just take in the Imagineering around you. Pretty great place, eh?

Big, huge thanks to Cody, who writes the fantastic Global Disney Pinvestigation Blog, for this guest review of the Cape May Cafe Clambake in Disney World’s Beach Club Resort. (Psst: I won’t blame you for scrolling down to the pic of the Oreo bon-bons first.) Take it away, Cody!

The Cape May Café is hard to miss in its central location in the lobby of Disney’s Beach Club Resort. I went to the character breakfast at Cape May Cafe several years ago, but have never been to the Clambake, which I have always been told was great. So, this year, for my Dad’s Birthday, he decided he wanted to try it out (all of my reviews seem to be of birthday meals ).

We had a “big party” of seven people, and when we called for the reservation, the agent said we probably wouldn’t be seated together; however, they recommended we arrive early just in case it was possible.

Our reservation was at 7:30pm, and we arrived at 6:30pm by accident (we thought traveling there would take longer). When we arrived no one was waiting, and the restaurant seemed pretty empty — especially for 6:30pm. We waited maybe three minutes, and they seated us right away, all together.

Atmosphere
The first thing that hits you as you move through the restaurant is the smell of seafood. Let me just say I am not a seafood person. (I know — I live on the beach in Florida and don’t like seafood: weird. As I mentioned before in other reviews, I am a picky eater.) I was hoping they had more than clams and crabs, and they did, but it didn’t seem that big of a selection.

Cape May Cafe Buffet Lines

Eats
As a non-fish-eater, I sampled some roast beef from the meat carving station, chicken nuggets from the kids’ station, and mashed potatoes, all of which were good. When I went up to the buffet again, I chose some pizza along with more chicken and potatoes.

Pastas and Roasted Chicken

Meanwhile, my Dad, who loves seafood, was in heaven. He loved the crab legs the best and thought the shrimp and the rest of the seafood offering was, “OK.” Overall, the overwhelming hit at the table were the crab legs; four people in our party tried them, and they all LOVED THEM.

Crab Legs, Clams

Now it was time for dessert, which in my opinion was the BEST in any Disney buffet. It included mini everything, from brownies, to berry cheesecakes, to key lime pies and cupcakes.

Oreo Bon Bons

Flan, Key Lime Pie, Cupcakes, Raspberry Cheesecake

Brownie, Berry Cheesecake, Mini Cupcake

But, my favorite was the freshly made and hot-out-of-the-oven Molten Chocolate Cake. A chef was on hand at the chocolate cake station, and I thought it was great when she pulled out the piece of cake from the warmer and drizzled (Correction: FLOODED) the cake with chocolate sauce. In my opinion, this is with Le Cellier’s Campfire S’more on level of dessert greatness.

Molten Chocolate Cake Construction

When we were all done, the waiter brought out a small “plop” of chocolate mousse with a candle in it for Dad’s birthday. It was delicious, and just the right size. It is comparable, and probably the same thing, to the Captain’s Grill mousse dessert.

Chocolate Mousse Birthday Dessert

Final Thoughts
Overall, it was a good meal. The restaurant is clearly known for its seafood, since it goes with the themeing of the Beach Club; but if you’re not a seafood person, I suggest going for the roast beef and desserts. I wasn’t exactly sure how I would like it, but it exceeded my expectations. And the service was amazing; they were always quick to refill drinks and take away dirty plates.

Rating: 4 of 5

So, I find it fascinating that of the four new restaurants that recently opened in Walt Disney World (Sanaa, Kouzzina, T-Rex, and Paradiso 37), three of them have donuts on their dessert menus!

Donuts! With dipping sauces and everything! Interactive desserts are my favorite, and I have been called the “condiment queen.” So you can imagine how excited I am to have dip-able desserts, and the fact that they’re donuts makes them that much better. Let’s take a look at the three up-and-comers now:

Kouzzina's Loukoumades

Kouzzina’s Loukoumades
Kouzzina is Iron Chef Cat Cora’s signature restaurant in Walt Disney World, and the menu consists of many of her favorite traditional Greek recipes. One of these recipes is for her outstanding Loukoumades.

These “Freshly Made Greek Doughnuts drizzled with Warm Honey” come to the table with two delicious dipping sauces, including one that’s tart, tangy, and berry-like. Dipping the loukoumades in that sauce and taking a bite was like indulging in the best jelly donut you’ve ever tasted.

The super sweet, slightly crunchy exterior of the donut gives way to the warm, airy center (think “hot-from-the-oil” Krispy Kreme…but gourmet…and you’ll understand the texture). And that tangy berry taste from the cool dipping sauce cuts and complements the sweetness perfectly. I can almost taste them now!

(In case you want to check it out, here’s my full Kouzzina review.)

Paradiso 37 Chilean Sopapillas

Paradiso 37’s Chilean Sopapillas
Paradiso 37 is a new Pleasure Island restaurant doing its all to spice up the defunct storefronts of the space. The “tower of tequila” and fresh look to the restaurant are very appealing — I was really pleased with our first trip there last Fall — and the Latin menu is a great addition to Downtown Disney.

On the menu, the dipping donuts were titled “Chilean Sopapillas: Crispy Fritters Dusted in Sugar and Served with Chocolate Sauce.” They’re listed right next to the churros served with caramel sauce, so we just had to get them both (see my full Paradiso 37 review for the churros pic!). Interestingly, they’ve since combined the two desserts into a combo!

The Sopapillas were a nice, light topping for a delicious and relatively heavy meal. The texture and taste are more along the lines of a doughy, spongy, homemade “cake” donut hole, versus the more waxy store-bought ones. The sauces were nothing to sing about, but I could see how they’d help out if your sopapillas were dry (which ours weren’t); personally, I used the sauces more for the churros.

These are definitely worth the cost: they’re “not-too-much and not-too-little” in both price and delivery.

T-Rex Meteor Bites

T-Rex’s Meteor Bites
To get a feel for the atmosphere of T-Rex, just think “Rainforest Cafe with Dinosaurs” and you’ve got it! With so much going on around you, of course you need to indulge in a dessert that’s just as fun as the surroundings.

T-Rex’s Meteor Bites are “warm chocolate and vanilla donut holes with powdered sugar, served with caramel and chocolate sauces.” Do your teeth hurt, yet? Mine do!

These reminded me of the Dunkin’ Donuts donut holes I used to get on Sunday mornings — the powdered sugar gives them an almost waxy feel in your mouth. We agreed that we enjoyed the vanilla versions the most, and getting two dipping sauces with the order was great.

These are definitely my third favorite of the donuts highlighted on the blog today, but they’re fun to order for the table to share!

If you’re interested in even more donuts, we’ve written about a couple of other donut-ish options in Disney World: check out our posts about the beignets at Port Orleans Resort, French Quarter, and our post about everyone’s favorite theme park snack, funnel cakes!
