There is no shortage of new treats in Disney World right now, whether they’re for the 50th Anniversary or celebrating the holidays.
New treats have popped up in every theme park, and in quite a few of the resorts as well! We’re in the Magic Kingdom today to try out one of the newest 50th Anniversary treats, which is celebrating Disney World’s origins, and we’ve got…mixed emotions about it.
If you head to the Main Street Bakery in Magic Kingdom (the Starbucks location in this park), you can find the Opening Day Celebration Cake!
This treat is made with a gluten-friendly chocolate cake base, milk chocolate mousse, and a strawberry center. It’s decorated with balloon sprinkles and has a chocolate piece on the end.
We thought the flavors of this treat were spot-on. Can you get a more iconic combo than strawberry and chocolate?
The chocolate mousse was super tasty — it wasn’t overwhelmingly sweet, and it balanced well with the tart strawberry flavor. And the chocolate cake was very moist and fluffy as well.
Our only problem with this cake was the texture. It has a gelatin-like feel in the mousse and the icing on top felt (and kind-of looks like) slime. At least for us, the icing left a weird texture in our mouth from just how gooey it was.
The flavors were great, but we could see these textures being an issue for some. The icing started to melt quite quickly so some of that sliminess could be due to the heat as well.
All the gooey-ness mixed together might be too much for some people, especially if texture is a big deal to you. We did like the texture of the sprinkles on top though, since they provided a little crunch to break up all the softness.
The little chocolate decal had an image of the Cinderella Castle on it, and it tasted like normal white chocolate to us.
Overall, we thought that the cake tasted amazing, but the textures were just a little strange (not necessarily bad, just different and perhaps not appealing to some). Its $6.99 price tag seemed a little high as well.
If you want to give it a try, the Opening Day Celebration Cake is available right now at the Main Street Bakery. Keep following DFB as we try more new treats in Disney World!
