Pixar’s Lightyear is going to infinity — and BEYOND!
The movie is in theaters NOW, and you can get tickets right here. There is also a ton of fun merchandise available, like new Minnie ears, action figures, a collectible key, and more. But, is the movie drawing crowds? Well, if the box office numbers are any indication, results are mixed.
Lightyear brought in $51 million in domestic box office during its opening weekend, according to CNBC. It is the best box office performance for an animated movie since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and also the first Pixar film to return to the big screen since the pandemic began.
However, Buzz and his new sidekick Sox fell short of analyst expectations, which predicted it would bring in $70 to $85 million domestically, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Chris Evans plays Buzz Lightyear, while other members of the cast include Taika Waititi, Keke Palmer, Uzo Aduba, and more.
The premise of the movie has confused a few people though. Basically, Lightyear is the movie Andy would have watched in theaters in the Toy Story universe. That’s why he wants a Buzz Lightyear toy — because it’s from the movie he loves!
Lightyear is either out or will be coming out soon in theaters around the world. But, there are some places where the movie has been banned, like in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, because of a same-gender kiss in the movie. Disney has refused to edit the movie differently for these markets.

At the international box office, Lightyear brought in $34.6 million for opening weekend, according to CNBC.
These numbers are much lower than the opening weekends for the last two Toy Story films. Toy Story 4 made more than $120 million domestically in its 2019 opening weekend, and Toy Story 3 earned $110 million in its 2010 debut.
It will be interesting to see how Lightyear does in theaters overall since it’s the first Pixar movie to make it back to the big screen since the pandemic began. Other Pixar movies, like Soul, Luca, and Turning Red, have gone straight to Disney+. So, if Lightyear does well, hopefully that means more Pixar movies will be debuting in theaters again!

Cool. This makes me laugh at all the haters who “are done” with Disney and hoped the movie would flop. All this because of their homophobic views and they that would “boycott” the movie. Goes to show that most people are more open minded and tolerant than the very few who are not.
51 million is not bad. It may have fell short of analyst expectations so far, but it is definitely not flop. I’m sure it will eventualy meet expectations.
