Another day, another streaming service bundle.
As streaming providers struggle to figure out how to add new customers and retain the ones they’ve already had, we’ve seen numerous streaming bundle deals and providers come together, including several already involving Disney. Now another of these unions has a name.
As first announced back in February, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery and Fox have teamed up to launch a single streaming app for their sports programming. On May 16th, the companies announced that the app will launch in the fall of 2024 – likely to correspond with the start of football season – and be called Venu (pronounced like venue) Sports.
Pete Distad, the CEO of the platform, said “We are excited to officially introduce Venu Sports, a brand that we feel captures the spirit of an all-new streaming home where sports fans outside of the traditional pay TV eco-system can experience an incredible collection of live sports, all in one place.” Distad continued, saying “As preparations for the platform continue to accelerate, we are singularly focused on delivering a best-in-class product for our target audience, built from the ground up using the latest technologies to engage and entertain discerning sports fans wanting one-stop access to live games.”
It’s not entirely clear what sports will be available on Venu, but the services’s website reads, promises, “the most sought-after live sports from the top leagues and teams, together in one place. All in a new app built from the ground up for sports fans.”
Of note, Venu still requires regulatory approval before it can launch. However, assuming that happens, it will mark another example of content providers coming together in the streaming format. Stay tuned to DFB for more industry news.
