Magic Kingdom is pretty much getting a big facelift this year. Cinderella Castle is getting a new paint job. There’s a massive construction project in the middle of the park to build a brand new Cars-themed expansion, Piston Peak. A Villains Land is being built behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which is also currently under construction and getting a massive update.
In Tomorrowland, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is also getting a bit of work done, and thanks to a new permit filed by Disney World, we think that it might be even more work than we initially thought. So let’s talk about this new permit.
A new permit was filed by Disney World for “general construction” for the address associated with Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. The ride closed on August 4th, 2025, to get some pretty big updates, including new ride vehicles, new blasters, new target technology, and new scenes. So we aren’t TOO surprised that the refurbishment is going to be lengthy. However, the new permit has an expiration date of April 2nd, 2027.
Granted, that doesn’t necessarily mean the ride will be closed through 2027 (especially since the opening timeline is spring 2026), but maybe it’s just Disney covering itself just in case the refurbishment does take longer than expected. The contractor listed on the permit is Jon Richards Company, LLC, a company that specializes in show sets, scenery, props, themed lighting, and more. The company has worked with Disney before, too.
However, this could mean that Disney will be continuing to work on the ride after it reopens in spring 2026, so it might the updates might not be 100% complete if and when it reopens then. However, the permit could be just a few small additions like lighting, set pieces, or even themed signage.
Of course, we’ll be keeping an eye out for updates on the status of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, so stay tuned to DFB for more.
