“You Won’t Believe This!” Snack: Cottontop Tamarin Cupcake

It’s been a while since we had a new cupcake for you, but this one’s a doozey!! (Is that how you spell “doozey?”)

You remember the White Chocolate Elephant cupcake and the Zebra cupcake, right? Well, joining its furry friends is the new Cottontop Tamarin cupcake at Kusafiri Bakery near Kilimanjaro Safaris in Harambe Village! You can also find this sweet treat at the Coffee Kiosk at the entrance to Discovery Island.

Pastry Chef Andreas Born blended both white and dark chocolate to create the cute (weird?) little Cottontop Taramin face. The mold sits atop a generous layer of butter cream. Underneath that is [Read more…]

Babycakes Vegan Cupcakes Now Available in Orlando’s Downtown Disney

This Fall Disneyland gets a cupcake stand, and so does Disney World!

Along with Pollo Campero and Fresh Apeel, Babycakes NYC Bakery opened up in the Downtown Disney Marketplace this week!

This bakery, featuring gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, soy-free, vegan, agave-sweetened, and kosher products (among others) is an ideal place to finish off a meal and a great place to cater to special diets. Check out the menu from the shop’s NYC location to get an idea of what they’ll be offering.

Thanks to @PlazaandMainSt for this pic from the new bakery: a chocolate cupcake top: $2

There’s Always Room for More at Biergarten

Fun, family, entertainment, pretzel bread, and beer! Those are the things that come to mind when you think of Disney World’s Biergarten Restaurant! It’s one of those restaurants that’s almost sure to put a smile on your face.

The unassuming facade — and massive wooden door — of this Epcot Germany restaurant don’t begin to describe what you’ll find once you walk inside.

Oktoberfest at Biergarten

A soaring ceiling covers an auditorium of a restaurant, where long wooden tables surround a stage where just about anything can happen, including lederhosen!

Themed to represent a community square in a small village in Germany, the decor will automatically transport you to a different place. And in the main stage area, you’ll be treated to some wonderful authentic Alpine entertainment! Feel free to cut a rug on the [Read more…]

Dining Planning for Christmas in Disney

The holidays in Disney Parks are an incredibly magical time, and because we’re well into the Disney World dining planning window for folks who are headed to Orlando during the holiday season I wanted to add a few resources to the planning sessions!

Where to Eat

Disney holiday menus will always feature special treats! At the request of several readers, I did a quick poll of our facebook fans and twitter followers to determine the answer to this question, “If you could dine at one Disney World restaurant for your holiday dinner, where would you go?” I was quickly rewarded with some fantastic answers! Here are some of the most popular responses:

Liberty Tree Tavern
This location wins with our readers for Thanksgiving, and it was an overwhelmingly popular choice for Christmas as well. Most readers indicated that the cozy atmosphere at Liberty Tree Tavern and the traditional holiday dinner fare is what would bring them here.

Liberty Tree Tavern Pot Roast

Mele Kalikimaka! ‘Ohana was tied for first place with Liberty Tree Tavern, so clearly DFB readers share my affinity for the islands! :-) After growing up in the snowy tundra of western New York State, Hawai’i sounds pretty good as a Christmas destination right about now! Plus, this location has [Read more…]

RIP Figaro Fries

Well, it’s happened. Sold for so many years at Magic Kingdom’s Pinocchio’s Village Haus, topped expertly with cheese, lettuce, ranch dressing, and tomatoes and desired by many, Figaro Fries lived a good life.

Figaro Fries

It was touch-and-go there at the end. Even after they were discontinued from the menu, Figaro Fries held on, coming back again and again for limited times. However, it seems as though this time, our delicious friends are gone for good.

Now, I know we could take this time to mourn, but instead, let’s be thankful for what we still have. (One thing we’ve learned about Disney restaurants is that they’re always changing; as Pocahontas says — you can’t step in the same river twice (that was her, right?).) So let’s take today to celebrate our crispy, salty, oily, and cheesy cravings for french fries by honoring what we’ve got left!

The Newspaper Chip
Thanks to Rose & Crown and the Yorkshire County Fish Shop, we’re still good to go on the chips-served-in-fake-newsprint!

“The Best Thing I Ever Ate in Disney!”: Snacks and Drinks

We’ve recently started a fun new series based on the Food Network’s (very cool) show, The Best Thing I Ever Ate. Due to some keen suggestions from readers, we’re splitting our series up into different sections: breakfast, appetizers & side dishes, snacks & drinks, entrees (lunch & dinner), and desserts.

Today, we’re taking a look at Snacks & Drinks! I’ve done my favorite brand of informal polling (i.e. posted questions on twitter and facebook ;) ) to find out others’ experiences of the “Best Thing They Ever Ate” — snacks and drinks style — in Disney parks and resorts. To be sure, the answers sounded veeeery similar to our recent post about the Best Value for your Snack Credits, but we had a few different ideas as well!

Who doesn’t indulge a bit with some of the great snacks available on a trip to Disney? Here are a few of the favorites, as determined by Disney Food Blog readers:

Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bar

Sometimes there’s nothing better than a classic! The Mickey Premium bar has been sweetening Disney trips for years, and I doubt that will stop anytime soon. While other ice cream treats come and go, I’m pretty sure you can count on the Mickey Bar to be available just about everywhere you can find the Big Cheese himself.

Disney Online Dining Reservations 190 days out?

Due to what appears to be a glitch in Disney’s Online Reservations System, guests have been able to make reservations 190 days out — even without a valid resort reservation number.

The site’s booking calendar extends 190 days from today, and when a date is chosen that exists outside of the 180 day window, guests are prompted to enter their resort reservation number as usual. Interestingly, when I entered “12345678” for a reservation number, I was easily able to book a reservation for dinner at Le Cellier, breakfast at Chef Mickey’s, and dinner at Boma 190 days out (December 13th).

Interestingly, Cinderella’s Royal Table is considered in “invalid” restaurant when searching this way.

Maybe this is beta testing for a new system, or maybe it’s a glitch with the new online reservation system. Remains to be seen.

Thanks to Chris for the heads up!
