While Walt Disney World is getting ready for its big 50th-anniversary celebration next year, there’s been a frenzy of construction and refurbishment happening throughout its theme parks and resorts!
And while our attention has been focused a lot of Epcot right now as we get ready for Regal Eagle Smokehouse, Space 220 Restaraunt, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind to debut, we just found out something MAJOR is about to happen at Magic Kingdom!
Magic Kingdom is the beating heart of Disney World, and until now it’s managed to stay relatively normal throughout the preparations for 2021’s big bash. Other than having its front entrance reconstructed and Tomorrowland’s upcoming TRON Lightcyle Run attraction, the rest of the park has remained almost untouched… until now.
And while Disney World centers around Magic Kingdom, Magic Kingdom itself revolves around Cinderella Castle — the park’s classic icon. In a statement just released by Disney today, Cinderella Castle “is about to get even more magical” with a “royal makeover” — which in Disney-speak means it’s about to undergo a refurbishment!
Disney went on to state, “You may notice this exciting work taking place as these stunning enhancements begin in the coming weeks, continuing through summer. But don’t worry! We’ll still get to catch all of our castle favorites like “Mickey’s Royal Friendship Faire” and “Happily Ever After”.
Disney also released an artists’ concept of what the new castle will look like! To us, the color scheme for the newly renovated Cinderella Castle appears to have a pinkish hue! They’re also adding a sparkly gold overlay like they did with Sleeping Beauty Castle!
Even though Disney is promising guests will still get to see its famous Castle shows, at this time we’re not sure if this means the entire castle will be covered like Disneyland’s was for Project Stardust or not. We’ll cross our fingers and toes that Cinderella Castle won’t be hidden behind scrim during your Disney World vacation this spring or summer, and we’ll keep you in-the-know of any and every update as this massive project progresses!

Any idea if this will affect CRT and BBB? I hope not 🤞
Tasha says
I think the changes are nice, subtle not like the birthday cake that I personally thought was tacky lol..
Hoping it will be done by late Aug..
Courtney says
Will this close attractions within the castle like CRT and BBB?
Brandon says
We are going March 13th and I was planning on proposing in front of the Castle on the 18th to my girlfriend… does this mean that it’ll be ruined??
Zach says
Hope it’s not covered the first week or May taking my wife and daughter on their first Disney trip.
Julie Fabio says
Praying for no scrim! Will be there may 16th-30th. May change our trip dates if it’s covered. This is a deal breaker.
chandra says
I think it is really pretty but it looks so much like Sleeping Beauty’s castle. I always liked that the color scheme was a little different for Cinderella’s. Still beautiful though.
Meganne Langford says
It looks stunning. I kinda wish they were adding the pink, because it makes it look too much like sleeping beauty’s castle in Disneyland. I just hope construction doesn’t start for a few more weeks since i’ll Be there next week. And I already experienced the Sleeping Beauty Castle scrim last year
Nick says
Kinda furious at Disney. I’m planning a proposal with the castle in the background. I spend huge money on tickets and photographers for them to potentially ruin that moment. Add insult to injury when they refuse to work with me at all because you either have to spend 10K or nothing. I have been going to Disney ever since I was little. I love Disney World, but as a shareholder and a customer, I’ve never been so angry at Disney.
Kim says
We are vacationing in early August, and were able to make reservations for Cinderella’s Royal Table. Likely the castle won’t be completely covered since they’re taking reservations.
Joanne says
I am visiting in the summer and have paid a significant amount of money for a castle-view room at the Grand Floridian – I hope it’s not covered in a tarpaulin and scaffolding!!
Rocksmith says
That “leaked” concept picture is used to get attention. Chances are the real final picture is being kept under wraps. Pun intended
Lois says
It’s beautiful but we will be there the end of Jan 2021. Hope we get to see it
DFB Sarah says
Brandon, no timeline released for now, but we’ll keep updating.
DFB Sarah says
Courtney, we’ll have to keep tabs on this!
Kristen says
I have a trip planned for end of May and bringing a first time visitor I am praying it is not completely covered this is completely heartbreaking. Fingers and toes crossed it won’t be completely covered. This may change my whole trip if it is completely covered.
Cori says
While I hesitate against any changing of Cinderella Castle, the artist’s rendering is so beautiful! It would be nice if Disney can figure out a way to make these updates without completely covering the castle, but you can hardly fault Disney for wanting to maintain and update the most iconic part of their park. Unfortunately, no matter when they work on it, they will be inconveniencing the millions of people visiting at that time.
For those of you planning to propose while the castle is possibly undergoing work, believe me when I say, if your fiance loves you enough to marry you, she will not even notice that the castle is less than perfection – you are all she will need to make the moment perfect!!!
Jeff says
I’ll be visiting WDW first week of May for my 9th trip. I hope the castle in not covered in construction scrim. If so will just have to make the best of it!
Linda Jones says
. I wish as they remodel the magic Kingdom’s castle they would put The Swan ride,Back around the castle. That was always so beautiful especially at night that’s one ride was just wonderful my little girls just loved it now they’re big women. And they still remember it
Caryn says
We’re finishing up an annual pass, so no problem for us. But we’re bringing friends who’ve only been once before the end of April. Epcot is already a mess. If the castle is significantly visually marred, I’m not going to feel good about this.
Thomas Tol says
I don’t no what to say
We
Haved saved money for a lot of years to have a great trip to Disney and now reading this news.i hope we can enjoy our trip but this is realy a big bummer
Marcie says
I’m taking my grandchildren to Disney for the first time June 14-20. I really hope the castle is there for the initial scene we all love!
John says
I’ll probably be in the minority, but I don’t like it. They should just leave it the way it has been, it’s iconic.
Nancy says
I think it looks beautiful! Of course just about anything would be better than the 25th anniversary cake!
For those of you who think it is going to “ruin your trip” then, you need to look at your priorities in life! Yes, it is beautiful and perfect for getting a picture in front of, but so what if you can’t do it on that day! I could be RAINING your whole trip and you might not get any good outdoor pictures, or something else. Things happen – always have a back up plan, and just SMILE AND BE HAPPY as you are in the happiest place on earth!!
Tracy says
This is just horrible news!!
Planning a graduation trip for my daughter and 12 guests, most have never been. I feel like their whole trip will be ruined by this we have already found out one of our favorite rides will be down for refurbishment during our trip, also the train is gonna be down too. I feel like I’m bringing my family to a big construction zone instead of a magical vacation.
Really gonna think long and hard about cancelling this trip!
NJ says
I really, really hate that new look. I always liked that it did not look like the one in Disneyland that I thought looked gaudy. Please don’t change the color scheme.
Carrie says
I will be very angry if they ruin my April vacation by covering up the castle! I haven’t been in over 20 years and am spending a lot of $$ on this trip and if it’s covered up I seriously will cry!! I would cry happy tears when I see it but these would be sad and angry tears if they do this! I hope they let us know ahead of time
Jason says
This is corporate greed at its worst. i dont think Disney would have planned this overnight right? Im going there in mid March and all things already booked and planned (resort, plane tix and park tix). If Disney communicated this few months in advance, people like me could have changed plans, but that hurts its bottom lines… now i will spend considerable sums of money and may not even see the castle without construction walls… this sort of customer service makes me second guess that i will ever come back to disney parks. I really hope enough people complain that they dont do something like this again.
kamile says
I heard rumors that they were going to paint the ENTIRE castle gold! so this is much better in my opinion.
Kelly says
I’m actually excited for this! Just hoping it doesn’t get covered like Disneyland did.
KLynn says
I know I’m in the minority but it’s not my favorite the colors aren’t right for WDW somethings shouldn’t change so much
Pauline Appleton says
My first visit was for the 25th anniversary so this is an improvement on the cake, I was so disappointed to see that but now I look back I just think it was hilarious.
Everyone’s taste differs, what some people think is perfect others would presume tacky, you can’t please everyone.
Work has to be done at some point, there’s no quiet time for it to be carried out.
Brexton says
There shouldn’t be a scrim for this refurb. Sleeping Beauty Castle had structural issues – the years of crowns, jewels, and other heavy decorative elements on the wooden towers meant sections needed to be replaced. I’m not a fan that the two will look so much alike, but I’m sure it’ll look beautiful.
Stephanie says
Hate it. Sorry. I love the clean white look.
stacey merritt says
I loved it until I saw that Sleeping Beauty Castle is the same color. NO. You can do the update, go ahead and freshen up the turret caps. BUT Instead of pink, just redo to a lighter grey so it looks fresh and new/clean. but NO PINK and a little less gold OR no gold at all. Keep it classic!
Breanna says
They are going to completely ruin the castle for me. I loved how it is different from all the other castles. I love that its white with blue unlike all the other castles. We were already having difficulties planning are trip and I don’t need anymore difficulties planning it now. Why Disney?
NJ says
Do not like the pink! I always liked the way the castle wasn’t tacky like Disneyland’s.
