Out of an abundance of caution against the spread of infection, California Governor Gavin Newsom has just made a huge announcement.
He’s just stated mass gatherings likely won’t be allowed to take place in California for the next several months, which could spell a much lengthier closure for Disneyland park than anyone realized.
In a statement released earlier by Variety, “The prospect of mass gatherings is negligible at best until we get to herd immunity and we get to a vaccine,” Newsom said. “So large-scale events that bring in hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of strangers, all together across every conceivable difference, health and otherwise, is not in the cards based upon our current guidelines and current expectations.”
When asked to give a timeframe for when large assemblies of people could meet again, Newsom stated, “When you suggest June, July, August, it is unlikely.”
Newsom also tweaked California’s stay at home order. He also said, in addition to social distancing, Cali would be mitigating the spread of the virus through contact tracing and while it’s possible restaurants and schools could re-open someday even with a vaccine, capacity would be limited.
So what does this mean for Disneyland and its potential reopening? Disney has pulled from the data, health experts, and local political officials when making decisions about the closures and this pattern will likely continue. We’re keeping our eye out for information that references what may need to happen before the parks can reopen. This statement gives us a bit more insight into what political officials are thinking regarding mass gatherings for the foreseeable future.
We will continue to keep you posted as announcements that could impact the parks are made.

Data shows that California’s early action on closures and stay at home orders has contributed to a much lower rate of ramp up on COVID-19 compared to other states. (For the data-inclined among you, see chart 24 here http://nrg.cs.ucl.ac.uk/mjh/covid19/?fbclid=IwAR1drNCCnFFc4uwao66IuRRBjunnapjAl3cEwzRKEVYcvNmYidfwsz5ZlVY#deaths-us)
While this is disappointing news to many, most importantly furloughed cast members, this is a wise approach, and it’s better to manage expectations.
Sending positive thoughts to all who are dealing with health and economic impacts at this very difficult time. I’m sure Disney Food Blog has been negatively affected, so maybe we can all be sure to show some love for the continued great info and look ways to support the team financially. (New products for your own stay-at-home Disney celebration maybe?)
In contrast to California’s governor, Florida’s governor didn’t want to issue a stay at home order and the one he finally issued has so many exceptions that, basically, you can do anything except rob banks and mug old people! BTW, I’m especially glad for not being able to mug old people because I’m in that category. Just yesterday, the governor gave another exemption – as an “essential business” – to the WWE, which stands for World Wrestling Entertainment. Yes, wrestling is an essential business, like doctors and nurses and firefighters and police and folks working in grocery stores so we can buy food to eat. And now we can add wrestlers to that list.
Margaret, I too live in FL
and am also a senior. Stop being so critical of the FL Governor who is doing the best he can. I have been to shop at Walmart lately and many people still refuse to wear the masks and gloves including some employees and some families shopping with all their young children sans gloves and masks. What can one expect when people disrespect the rules. This also included a woman in an Advent Health uniform.
I’ve commented on other blogs that’s it was doubtfull Disney would reopen before a vaccine was developed and distributed to the generat population, And was Banned from Posting on that Blog!
Thank You Tom !!!
