It’s no secret that some people really, really, REALLY love to collect Disney memorabilia (hi, it’s us, we’re some of those “people”).
Whether you always make sure to grab the latest pin, or you can’t go home without buying a new pair of Minnie Ears, there are so many different Disney things to collect. But — perhaps the ultimate Disney collectibles are those that might be a little dusty. That’s right, we’re talking vintage Disney memorabilia! Part of Disney history was recently uncovered somewhere you might not expect, and we’ve got all the details!
According to BBC News, workers at a landfill in Wales were going about their duties when they spotted something that looked important — and they were right! A rare Mickey Mouse toy dating back to the 1930s was among the rubbish but the workers thankfully saved it! (We’ll admit, he’s a little creepy but ya gotta love the history.)
Experts were able to trace the toy back to the local Old Dean’s Toy Factory in a neighboring county. Turns out the toy was actually made at that nearby factory! That factory was the “first UK manufacturer to make Disney items in the 1930s.” How cool is that?!
This doll is now in good hands, as it was donated to a nearby museum, the Pontypool Museum. The curator of the museum told BBC that the staff is hoping to send Mickey over to a professional conservator to be cleaned up and “structurally supported” before going on display!
Just how much might this little buddy be worth? Well, according to the BBC, “Other good condition versions of the doll have sold for around £300, but there is no indication of how many still exist.” That’s just over $400 in the U.S.!
