REVIEW: This NEW EPCOT Snack Left Us DIVIDED

A new quesadilla has just debuted at EPCOT and you know we couldn’t pass up an opportunity to try it out!

EPCOT is home to some incredible eats, treats, and drinks to keep you eating around the world on your next visit. While we’ve been preoccupied with the new entertainment, the recently opened CommuniCore Hall, and the recent closure of Test Track, it was a nice change of pace to have another reason to look forward to coming out to EPCOT.

If you’ve found yourself exploring all the eats and drinks that EPCOT has to offer, chances are you’re probably spending quite a bit of time around the World Showcase. Since Mexico is one of the first countries you could encounter depending on which way you opt to start your World tour, we had to talk about one of our favorite spots to visit.

Choza de Margarita is usually our go-to stop for refreshing margaritas and light bites, so when we spotted a recent change to the menu, we knew we had to jump at the chance to try it!

This restaurant just added a “Pastor Quesadilla” for $12.50 which is made of flour tortillas filled with pork pastor, Monterey Jack cheese, and pineapple relish with sides of salsa verde and esquites.

At first glance, they looked appetizing so we decided to dive right on in head first and take a bite! However, our excitement quickly turned to confusion with this one. The quesadilla’s al pastor meat tasted more like pulled chicken rather than true pork meat. Additionally, the meat itself didn’t have much flavor which was really helped out by being completely saturated in a low-spice red sauce that was very drippy and greasy.

The quesadilla does have a little bit of a fruity side thanks to pineapple bits and red onion chopped up and mixed into the cheese, but that along with the sauce was really the only flavor in the entire quesadilla rather than coming from the meat and enhanced with the added ingredients.

As we mentioned before, this quesadilla is served with a side of esquites. This is made up of corn with a chipotle aioli folded into the mix, and topped with queso cotija and Tajin chile-lime powder.

Unfortunately, the side for this meal is served in a very small cup (think like a side of salsa to go). There really was only enough for a few bites so if you were expecting a larger cup of these you’ll be disappointed but you might not be able to get past its taste. While this might not be everyone’s experience here, when we tried our esquites, we found it to taste like cafeteria food. The corn felt undercooked, the chipotle aioli really tasted more just like a doctored mayonnaise with hardly any spice to it and the cheese was concentrated to the top just the very center of the cup.

This was also served with a side of salsa verde which appeared and smelled to have been made with avocado.

This is the same salsa verde you can grab at the neighboring restaurant, La Cantina de San Angel, just across the street, and was just what we were anticipating. This is a salsa made of green tomatoes as opposed to red tomatoes with a few spices, vinegar, and avocado added in. There wasn’t anything outstanding about this one, but we did appreciate that it was served with the dish along with a few lime wedges.

While we felt like the quesadilla’s flavor could use some work, it wasn’t all bad. Unless you’re familiar with how al pastor might taste elsewhere, you could very well enjoy this dish just as it is. However, if you’re someone who craves the flavor-packed meat typically found in al pastor dishes, that wasn’t quite the experience we had with this dish ourselves and you might find yourself disappointed.

Overall, it’s not a variation of a quesadilla we’ll be jumping at the chance to try again, but it served as a decent snack for when we really needed something savory to munch on.
