The Atlantic area has been fairly quiet so far this hurricane season, until a system in the Gulf was upgraded to Hurricane Isaias on Wednesday, October 7th. Now, select parts of Florida are under a state of emergency.
It’s no secret that Disney has been in a years-long political conflict with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis that started as a disagreement, eventually evolving into a legal battle between the two over Disney’s “special district” political privileges.

Lately, though, the two parties have started to get along, with news of a settlement gave hope that the situation was turning a corner. Now, we have an update.

Even as Walt Disney World has added new attractions in the last several years, much of the attention on Disney has focused on matters outside the theme parks. Specifically, Disney’s now-years-long political conflict with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, which began as a political disagreement and then evolved into a legal battle between the two over Disney’s “special district” political privileges. The governor essentially took control of the body once known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District in early 2023, turning it into the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. However, in recent months, news of a settlement gave hope that the situation was turning a corner. Now, there’s even more evidence.

You might be familiar with DeSantis and his policies through his appointed board that oversees Disney World and the surrounding areas: the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Board. Now, though, DeSantis is targeting a new industry outside of the theme parks: food.
The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (CFTOD) has been experiencing quite a staff shakeup lately.
Reedy Creek Improvement District
Once the Reedy Creek Improvement District, the CFTOD was taken over by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who quickly appointed his own members to the board. Since then, we’ve seen a mass employee exodus in the district and more recently, some changes to those DeSantis-appointed board members. Now, yet another CFTOD board member is out.
When Florida Governor Ron DeSantis turned Disney World’s Reedy Creek Improvement District into the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, he appointed a new board of directors to oversee the land.
Reedy Creek Improvement District
Since then, we’ve seen the board make some major decisions regarding the land where Disney World resides. There have been a few board member changes since the beginning, but now, the board will be getting a brand-new administrator.
Another CHANGE has happened in the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District effective immediately.

If you’ve been following along with The Walt Disney Company news at all for the past year or so, then you’ve probably heard about the ongoing battle between Disney and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
Reedy Creek
Disney and DeSantis’s Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Board have been fighting for control over Disney’s special tax district. DeSantis stripped Disney of rights over the former Reedy Creek Improvement District after Disney publicly opposed the governor’s decision to pass the Parental Rights in Education Act. Disney then claimed that this was a violation of federal rights, arguing that there had been a “relentless campaign to weaponize government power” against Disney to punish them for their political views. Since then, DeSantis filed a lawsuit against Disney to attempt to undo agreements made between Disney and the former Reedy Creek Improvement District. From there, things get pretty complicated.
Ever since Florida Governor Ron DeSantis first attempted to take control of Disney World’s Reedy Creek Improvement District, there have been two very opposing sides.
Disney vs. DeSantis
DeSantis was eventually able to replace the Reedy Creek Improvement District with the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, giving the area a new governing board. Since then, the board’s decisions have been controversial and not everyone has been pleased by the proceedings. Currently, some lawmakers are seeking to repeal DeSantis’s takeover…but there may be some obstacles in the way.

Disney vs. DeSantis
The Walt Disney Company filed a lawsuit against Governor DeSantis in April of this year, claiming that the governor has waged a “relentless campaign to weaponize government power” against Disney. Now, in papers filed on Monday, October 30th, Disney once again commented on this lawsuit and warned of potential repercussions if the court rules against Disney. [Read more…]
