What’s New Around Disney World: January 23, 2015

The year isn’t the only thing new around Disney World… we’re on the lookout for new eats, sweets, and refurbishment feats. Please keep your hands, arms, feet, and legs inside your ride vehicle at all times as we tour all four Disney World Parks to see What’s New!

Something's always just around the corner at Disney World!

Animal Kingdom

We’re starting out with another WILD trip to Animal Kingdom, which includes a couple of menu updates. At Yak & Yeti Restaurant, Firecracker Shrimp and Ahi Tuna Nachos for Two join the appetizers (the Dim Sum Basket for two remains), and Ginger Salmon with Japanese Udon has been added to the noodle dishes. Chicken Tikki Masala is among the new specialty entrees, and Malaysian Seafood Curry arrives under Wok selections.

Be sure to check out the Specialty Drinks for some fun new beverages: Pink Himalayan, Kiwi Kimono, and a Rickshaw Rickie.

Right next door at Local Food Cafes (also known as Yak & Yeti Counter Service), Korean Stir-fry Barbecue Chicken has replaced the Sweet and Sour Chicken.

At Dino Diner in Dinoland, U.S.A., the Snow Cone has been switched out for Nachos, served with just cheese or as Nachos Supreme (at least for these cooler months).

Tamu Tamu Refreshments has undergone another menu refresh, currently offering the Slow-cooked Chicken Curry, Vegetarian Curry, and Roasted Chicken Salad.

This isn’t entirely unexpected, as the menu here seems to go through a standard rotation. So, if you’re disappointed that the Slow-cooked Pulled Beef Sandwich is no longer available, Hakuna Matata. It could very well make its way back around in a few months.

And, as we discussed a few weeks back, Flame Tree Barbecue is closed for refurbishment with a tentative reopening of April 1st. Find out where you can find some of your favorite Flame Tree foods at other locations around the park!

More Details of Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto Revealed at…Disneyland!?

We have some fun new updates for you today of what’s soon to be at Walt Disney World — but they’re coming to us from Disneyland!

Intrepid Dining in Disneyland columnist Heather Sievers attended the fun Mahaloween Luau event earlier this year at Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar in the Disneyland Hotel. While there, she grabbed a sneak peek of what we can expect at Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto. We also gleaned a few more details from The Atomic Grog!

Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto Concept Art — Coming Soon to Walt Disney World!

While details have been kept mostly under wraps since we were given our first glimpse of concept art last Spring, the presentation by Imagineers Brandon Kleyla and Kyle Barnes at the Mahaloween Luau served to add a few more pieces to the puzzle.

I'll Have Whatever She's Making, Please!

Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto

Although we know that Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto will be similar to the wildly popular Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar in Disneyland Hotel, we’re also starting to get an idea of how they’ll differ. And the key is right here in some of the photos we are sharing with you today.

Trader Sam's Tiki in Orlando

Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort

The most interesting thing to come out of the presentation is the subtle difference in themeing between the two different Trader Sam’s locations. While the Disneyland Trader Sam’s has a style more reflective of Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise ride — think African Queen — Imagineers have something entirely different in mind for the Grog Grotto.

At the Polynesian, Trader Sam’s will celebrate more of the nautical aspect of the intrepid head salesman’s adventures. Look for the primary themeing cues to come courtesy of the [Read more…]

Disney Holiday Gift Guide 2014: Disney Mug-a-Palooza!

With cooler temperatures on the rise (wait… that’s not right ;) ), it’s that time of year to curl up with a warm beverage in your favorite mug! Of course, it happens to coincide with the time of year to think of gift-giving (and receiving!). So let’s take a look at some super fun Disney mugs that hit the scene in a veritable Mug-a-palooza! If you’d like to get a little shopping done while you’re at it, just click any of the links below…

Okay, I don’t know how much she’ll help you against the chill, but this purple Elsa Mug captures the Frozen Queen quite nicely…

Spotted! New Disney Princess Mugs… and a few Villains, too!

Okay, Disney Princess fans, this one’s for you (oh, and you Villains fans haven’t been forgotten, either)!

I always love to check out the mugs in the big merchandise shops around Disney World – places like Magic Kingdom’s Emporium, Epcot’s Mouse Gears, and Downtown Disney’s World of Disney.

Main Street Emporium

Main Street Emporium

Why, I don’t know, because I have way more mugs than I have people to pour coffee for… plus, I’m pretty sure they multiply themselves (I mean, I couldn’t have purchased all of those, could I?). But still, I’ve always liked the idea of a souvenir that you can use in your daily life — and use often, at that.

Well, my most recent visit to the Emporium was rewarded with my first look at these: the new line of Princess mugs!

Much like the popular ear hat ornaments, these mugs incorporate distinctive elements of a particular character’s design and story (in fact, Disney Merchandising has stated that this line was inspired by the ear hat ornaments).

First, for those who might be unfamiliar with the ear hat ornaments, here’s an example.

Now on to the mugs! I have to start with Princess Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), because I love how the clever design showcases both her pink dress as well as her blue one. I’m also pretty impressed with the way the “gems” are painted in such a way that they almost look real.

Snow White’s mug is certainly eye-catching, due to her bold primary colors as well as the sparkling apple.

By the way, the sparkling apple is what makes this one unfit for the microwave – I did not find that to be the case with the other mugs when I peeked at the bottom (though I should note that Cinderella’s mug wasn’t yet on the shelves the day I saw them, so I’ll need to check. I can’t wait to see that one!).

You gotta love that so many of our Princesses have iconic hair-dos, and those have been incorporated into each mug handle as well. Arguably, the most famous locks belong to Rapunzel

News! Disney Food Merchandise Coming to Downtown Disney’s Marketplace Co-op

As Downtown Disney begins its transformation in earnest to Disney Springs, there are already oodles of changes taking place. Just last week, Disney announced the closing date for Pollo Campero and NYC Babycakes in the Marketplace for March 19th.

But we’re not just saying goodbye to things, thankfully. There are already some “hellos” on the way in the not-too-distant future! Specifically, the Marketplace Co-op — formerly Team Mickey — will open its doors in just a couple months (no official opening date yet!).

Disney recently provided a glimpse at some of merchandise that will make it’s debut at this location. According to Disney, the Marketplace Co-op will feature six boutiques and “serve as a testing space” for new retail shops and products. I gotta say, the first glimpse of some of the dining and kitchen merchandise coming to the Disney Centerpiece boutique has already passed the test with me…

I love the Dole Whip air fresheners that showed up at Disney World several months ago, but now it looks like we’ll be able to bring home 3-D versions of this treasured treat in a miniature ceramic! How cute would that be on a desk or shelf? (You’ll notice right next to the Dole Whips is also a ceramic Orange Bird :) .)

You know the last thing I need in my home? Another glass. Still… you know what I totally need? Those colorful Adventureland glasses… or perhaps the Aloha Isle hurricanes! What?!??!?!?!?!

Every time I look at this picture I notice something new. For instance, our friend, the Orange Bird, is perched on top of an Adventureland napkin or placemat.

I love the rest of the line inspired by Adventureland, and those nods to some of the details – and our favorite birds! – found in Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room. All the plates you see in these images, by the way, are [Read more…]

Merchandise: Tiki Themed Ceramics to Celebrate the Enchanted Tiki Room’s 50th Anniversary

There’s been a celebration this summer of one of Disney’s most classic attractions: The Enchanted Tiki Room. We’ll have a post soon detailing the celebration first hand, but first up, we’ve got some merchandise to talk about!

First appearing at Disneyland in 1963, this feather-filled confection of song is now observing its 50th anniversary.

To mark the occasion, Disney has released a series of ceramic kitchen items reminiscent of the attraction’s Polynesian Island mood.

Among the wares are several items that would be perfect serving pieces for your next home luau. (You’re planning one now, aren’t you?)

There’s a chalice-like bowl called the “Rongo Enchanted Tiki Bowl.” I’m not sure if this piece, designed by Kevin Kidney and Jody Daily, is meant to hold chips and nuts, or whether it’s a goblet for an especially thirsty sailor.

I’m thinking that if you’re out of pineapples and are serving lapu lapus, then this would make a fair alternative vessel.

The “Luau Bowl” could be for chips, or it could hold the [Read more…]

Fun Find: Tea and Teapots in Epcot’s China Pavilion

There are few things that I enjoy more than strolling around World Showcase in Epcot. But in addition to taking in the sights and bites from the various pavilions representing each country, I adore poking into the shops to discover what new treasures have been added since my last visit.

Today, we’re meandering back through the China Pavilion to take a look into a shop that few even know exist: The House of Good Fortune.

House of Good Fortune -- Outside View

I could use some good fortune, couldn’t you? Let’s see what we find!

Teas and Candies

One item that I love to hunt for in World Showcase is tea. I’m an avid tea drinker, and it’s always fun to wander around the countries in search of my favorite varieties, or something new to add to my collection.

The tea display offers many different types of tea, all packaged in different ways.

I love these little canisters! They’re pretty — and handy long after the tea you bought is gone.

Canisters of Tea Forte

There’s also a wonderful assortment of more traditional options. Being in here seriously reminds me of my days wandering the Pearl River Mart in New York City! :-)

These boxes would last you a while — they’re more than a pound! They’re much bigger than [Read more…]
