It’s all things Mickey today as we celebrate his 90th birthday
this weekend. There is so much specialty food to celebrate you can’t help but be happy! We stopped at the Gasparilla Island Grill in the Grand Floridian to try out Mickey’s Birthday Cupcake.
This wins for maybe one of the cutest cupcakes we’ve seen so far. Plus the bow matches the spinning bow on the Glow Wands that you can get in the Magic Kingdom. Anytime our food can match a spinning glow wand we’re all in. ;-D
We told you it was cute! Look at how the fondant decorations have a 3-D effect of them. That’s the detail we love to see in anything Disney does.
This is a vanilla cupcake filled with a cookies and cream filling and topped with vanilla frosting. Those Mickey ears are chocolate (pretty sure it’s white chocolate that’s been colored black.
This was an excellent option if you love thick, sugary frosting. This is the closest to lard-based frosting I’ve seen Disney get in a while, so it’s straight up birthday cake frosting. Like makes-your-teeth-ache kind of stuff. I loved it, but a LOT of you will think it’s way too sweet, so wanted to give you that heads up.
The cookies and cream filling was forgettable.
We also found this had a soggy bottom, and it wasn’t the first soggy bottomed cupcake we ran into this week. So strange, but the base of a couple of cupcakes I’ve had this visit have been completely soaking wet — and the cupcake wrappers themselves have been drenched at the bottom. No idea what could cause that, so if you’re a baker and can shed some light, let me know. It’s pretty gross. 🙁 We’re hoping this is not a trend that continues through our trip or in the future with Disney cupcakes. (Any Great British Bake Off fans out there picturing Mary Berry not being impressed with this soggy bottom trend?)
Check out all the special treats and sweets available in the Magic Kingdom this weekend, and the merchandise, too!

Edward says
My best guess at the soggy bottom situation is that the cupcakes were left in the baking pan too long after they were taken out of the oven and the moisture is from trapped condensation.
DFB Sarah says
Edward, that sounds like the likely cause.
Sandra says
I agree that leaving them to cool in the baking pan too long could cause the sogginess. It also could be that they put the still warm/hot cupcakes into a fridge to cool them off quickly before frosting and that caused the condensation at the bottom.
Thanks for the warning about the icing. I once threw away half a deconstructed cupcake in MK because the icing was unbearable. Picked out the cake bits but tossed the rest. Waste of a snack credit.
Jackie says
Disney adding simple syrup to the cakes post bake to try to keep them moist could also cause the soggy bottom, as the syrup would drain to the bottom of the liner.
Melissa says
The sweeter the better, I’m sorry I’m not there to try one.
