Yesterday, the Re-Open Florida Task Force, met to discuss some of the concerns and potential solutions for moving the state out of shutdown.
Another meeting occurred today to discuss more specific sectors. With real estate, construction, cruise lines, and airports on the list of items, the team worked to envision what reopening may look like for these industries. Cruises are a notably at-risk model during the global health crisis, so members of the task force stepped forward to expand on their priorities for cruise lines.
Members of the committee mentioned that cruise ships and theme parks are essential to the Florida economy, so it is crucial that everyone does their part to make people feel safe. Rick Sasso, who is the President & CEO of MSC Cruises spoke on the subject of how cruise lines are looking to manage health concerns when they are able to begin sailing again.
First, he suggested that temperature checks (which Disney Cruise Line briefly implemented before halting cruises) could be implemented. He also mentioned the use of questionnaires which could potentially be given to each passenger to see where they have been, their current state of health, and what underlying health conditions they may have. In some instances, passengers could be denied boarding if it is in the best interest of others at sea.
It won’t only be the passengers who see an effect of health measures though. MSC Cruise is also considering temperature checks for crew members to make sure they’re in ship-shape as well. If anyone on board becomes ill with something like the flu, the cruise line mentioned that they could potentially be isolated for the safety of others.
Interestingly enough, Sasso also mentioned that the company is already seeing significant bookings for 2021, but they’re still not sure when an opening will be possible.
While Disney has not released a statement on this yet, these comments could show us what the future of Disney Cruise Line might hold as all the different cruise lines work to make customers feel safe. In Sasso’s words making people feel safe is a priority. “It’s very likely,” he said, “that we will come out of this as a nation healthier and at less risk because of all the things everyone is doing.”

Cruise ships must also inprove the fultration systems and expand the medical area of the ship to include ventilators, medications and beds. Medical staff should be properly trained on outbreaks.
There may be legal privacy issues with asking people to disclose any underlying health issues (for example, employers can’t require this of their employees unless it affects the employee’s ability to perform their job). Unless there is a law enacted, I don’t see this happening. Temperature checks and voluntary disclosure of your current health will probably be okay from a legal perspective.
