The day we’ve all been waiting for is finally here!
The EPCOT Food and Wine Festival has finally started! We’ll admit we’ve been dreaming about this festival ever since Disney released the full menus for all the food booths. We’re also ready to try out this year’s cheese crawl and check out the Eat to the Beat concert series, which is returning to the festival after a two-year hiatus. But now, let’s talk about FOOD.
Let’s head on over to the Tangierine Cafe: Flavor of Medina — you’ll find this in the closed Tangierine Cafe in the Morocco Pavilion.
Menu
The menu here is dedicated to Moroccan flavors, including Kebabs and Falafel.
All of these dishes are returning items.
Food
You can get the Kebabs with either Grilled Chermoula Chicken or Moroccan-spiced Lamb. They’re served with carrot-chickpea salad and garlic aïoli. In the past, we’ve preferred the chicken over the lamb, especially for those people who don’t want strong seasonings on their meat. The kebabs are $5.75.
We tried the Grilled Chermoula Chicken Kebab first. We thought the chicken was well-seasoned, but it was still a bit dry. We liked the good char on it, though. The garlic aïoli tastes more like mayonnaise. The carrot chickpea salad was light and refreshing, but we felt it needed more seasoning.
The Moroccan-Spiced Lamb Kebab was very well-cooked and also had that nice char on it. The seasoning was delicious, but again the garlic aïoli still tasted heavily of mayonnaise. We also found the chickpea and carrot salad with this one a little bland. It did taste a LITTLE different like there was more vinaigrette on it.
The plant-based Fried Falafel Pita with tahini sauce for $5.25 is usually a delicious option, but we still felt the tahini sauce felt heavy on the mayonnaise. The lettuce didn’t work for us inside the pita because it kinda’ overwhelmed everything else. The falafel actually tastes better on its own — the breading on it is the best part. Again, though, we felt like the dish as a whole could’ve used more seasoning.
Next up is the Stone-baked Moroccan Bread with hummus, chermoula, and Zhoug dips for $5. This bread is so light and fluffy — it doesn’t even NEED any dips. The hummus just tasted like regular store-bought hummus, and the Zhoug dip had a strong garlic taste, but we liked it. The chermoula dip had a strong olive taste, so if you don’t like olives, you might not like this dip. Honestly, we would’ve just preferred the bread on its own.
We’ve been big fans of the Pistachio Cake with cinnamon pastry cream and candied walnuts in the past. We’ve liked this cake at past festivals and it still does not disappoint. It’s extremely light and moist, and the cinnamon cream is the perfect complement to the cake. We also liked the texture the candied walnuts gave it. Because it was hot out today, the chocolate piece on top melted, but we’re going to call that a happy accident because it made the cake EVEN BETTER.
The cake is $4.75.
Drinks
A variety of ciders are returning this year, including the 3 Daughters Brewing Fig Hard Cider, which was a favorite of ours last year. The fig flavor wasn’t overwhelming and it was SUPER refreshing.
The Bold Rock Ginger Turmeric Hard Cider has a spiciness to it, thanks to the ginger. If you love ginger beer, this one is a must. The Stem Ciders Hibiscus Session Hard Apple Cider is new this year and we were so excited to try it. All ciders are $5 for a small pour and $9 for a larger pour. You can grab all three in a Cider Flight for $10.
The Fig Cocktail with white cranberry juice and fig vodka is returning this year. Last year, we found it to be a little different from other cocktails we’ve had, with a unique flavor (that seemed a little too medicinal for us). We thought it seemed a little sweeter this year, though. If you don’t like cranberry or fig flavors, you’ll want to skip it. Try it for yourself for $11.
You can also pick up the Corkcicle Classic Tumbler here for $32.
Overall
Overall, we have mixed feelings about Tangierine Cafe this year. Some of the foods were much blander than we would’ve expected, and we really feel that the bread dish works well just as bread WITHOUT the dips. The Pistachio Cake is always a winner, though, so if you visit this booth, make sure to at least order that.
