We’re back in Hollywood Studios today!
Like everyone else who’s made their way to Hollywood Studios on its reopening day, we have one attraction that rises above the others on our priority list. Rise of the Resistance is still the highest-demand ride in Disney World. To help with the lines, Disney has implemented a Virtual Queue — and it’s a totally new system than it was before the closures!
Instead of there being one big window to get a spot in the queue, guests in Hollywood Studios have three chances — 10AM, 1PM, and 4PM. It used to be that you had two hours to return when your boarding group was called; now it’s only one hour and we MISSED our window! Here’s what happened!
Today, we were able to get a spot in the first queue at 10AM. We were assigned boarding group 26, so we had a good few hours to poke around the park. When our group was called to return to Rise of the Resistance, we were due to head to our Advance Dining Reservation at 50’s Prime Time Cafe at the same time! Uh oh!
Luckily, Cast Members at Rise of the Resistance let us know that they would be lenient since we had a conflicting dining reservation. Sure enough, once our hour was up (we were still trying to get into the clean plate club!), we noticed that our Virtual Queue screen had changed to tell us that we had missed the window.
That one-hour return window is NOT super long so make sure you keep an eye on the boarding group calls if you’re waiting for your turn. Missing that window could mean you miss your chance at Rise of the Resistance for the day. Luckily, Cast Members were willing to accommodate due to our Advance Dining Reservation.
So, after our meal, we headed back to Galaxy’s Edge. When we arrived at the attraction, we found out that it was closed for technical difficulties. So, we spoke to a Guest Relations Cast Member who explained that since we’d had a boarding group and the attraction had shut down, we would be able to ride whenever once everything was up and running.
Whew! That was a close call, huh? We’ll definitely be heading back to get our Rise of the Resistance ride in later, but we might wait for a little after the attraction comes up. It’s possible that physical lines could get long as folks who weren’t able to ride flood back to the attraction.
If a similar situation happens to you, make sure you talk to a Cast Member! You never know when a dining reservation or unexpected ride closure could get between you and Rise. Stay tuned to DFB as we take you around a reopened Hollywood Studios ALL DAY!

If you missed your ride que time, you shouldn’t have been allowed in….and should have been instructed to attempt to get the 4pm que. Why should you get special treatment because of dining time? Another guest group was blocked out because of your “reservation”.

This Virtual Queue system is COMPLETELY bogus. We were in Hollywood Studios the first day of official re-opening, tried all 3 times to get on the ride (tried at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 4 p.m.) and got shut out each time. It is a pure lottery system and that is just plain wrong considering the amount of money that one spends to get into the theme park. The fast pass / standby system is fair. At least with that system, if you’re not able to snag a fast pass, you have the option of waiting in line (yes, perhaps for hours) to get on the ride, if that is what you choose to do.

Are those 3 times when you have to try and get in a boarding queue? When you come into the park at 11 you can’t try for a queue at 1, you actually have to wait until 1 to try? This is all new to me.
DFB Sarah says
Vicki, in theory if there were still Virtual Queue spots available at 11, you could try for one. But they go quickly (within minutes). You will more likely have to wait until 1PM to try for one.

I think this “virtual queue” for Rise of the Resistance is a big fat failure. I constantly see only local vloggers who have been on the attraction a bazillion times and brag about it. You’re out of luck if you are in WDW for a short time. I will be coming to WDW in Jan and hate know that may not see this attraction because of how attendance is handled.

Has anyone heard an update as of 2021 (possibly in the month of July) regarding missed boarding passes due to advance dining reservations? Part of me is wondering if I should just miss out on a restaurant even if I get charged and was just about to enter the doors of the restaurant due to how rare ROR boarding passes are.
Also when referring to talking to Guest Relations, can I find them in the front of the park or near the ROR ride?
DFB Sarah says
Jessica, one of our reporters tells me that if you take the receipt from your Table Service dining to Rise of the Resistance, you can show both the dining receipt and a screenshot of your Boarding Pass to the Cast Member there and be able to ride. She says she’s done this several times and had no issues.
