Important changes are being made at the former Reedy Creek Improvement District (now called the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District).

The Board of Supervisors for the District is now made of Governor DeSantis’ appointees, and within just a few months, they have declared some of Disney’s agreements with the old board to be invalid, initiated a lawsuit against Disney in state court, heard some complaints and fears from Disney Springs restaurant operators, and more. And now more changes have been revealed.

Florida Judge Expected To Rule in Disney Reedy Creek Lawsuit Soon

The ongoing political conflict between The Walt Disney Company and the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (previously known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District) may soon come to a head. Following the latest update in the state case between the CFTOD and Disney, more news may be coming soon.

For reference, Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Board’s lawsuit came shortly after Disney filed a lawsuit against the Board and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. The CFTOD Board filed a countersuit on May 1st, 2023. From there, Disney filed a motion to dismiss the CFTOD Board’s countersuit, stating the suit was “moot.” The CFTOD Board filed a response to Disney’s motion to dismiss, and finally, on July 14th, the judge heard arguments in the district’s lawsuit against Disney. Disney Issues Important WARNING About DeSantis Conflict

Disney has issued an important warning about how the ongoing battles in Florida could really impact the Company.

We’ve got a long post on the history here, but the basic story here is that following Disney’s statement against the Parental Rights in Education Bill (what critics called “Don’t Say Gay”), Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Florida legislators took steps to dramatically change the Reedy Creek Improvement District Disney had controlled and operated under for 50+ years. Disney has filed a federal lawsuit alleging that this was all a plan of retaliation by the Governor and others, the Governor has signed a law to void some of Disney’s agreements with the prior board, the new board of the District has filed a lawsuit against Disney, and (basically) the battle is still ongoing. But now we’ve got an interesting development to share.
