In 2024, Disney announced many upcoming changes for Disney World’s Magic Kingdom.
It was revealed that Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America will close to make way for two new Cars-themed attractions. We finally found out what will lie “Beyond Big Thunder” as the highly anticipated Disney Villains Land was confirmed. While we know that there are big things on the horizon for the Magic Kingdom, we have a feeling that another big announcement is in the works!
We know that a lot of work has been done on Magic Kingdom just within the last year, including the opening of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and the re-imagined Country Bear Jamboree. Still, there are a few clues that lead to the potential of another big announcement for Disney World’s castle park.
It is no secret that the future has already come for a majority of Tomorrowland, and the land could use some extra love. Many fans have speculated that an overhaul of the land will eventually be announced. While Disney has not confirmed a Tomorrowland refurb, we have three reasons why an announcement about the future of Tomrowwland might be made.
To start, when the new concept art was revealed for the Monsters, Inc. Land coming to Hollywood Studios, we noticed something suspicious about one of the billboards. If you look closely, you can see that it is advertising for the Monsters, Inc., Laugh Floor, which currently resides in Tomorrowland.
Could this mean the Laugh Floor will move into the new land? Maybe. While concept art changes and sometimes does not reflect what is built, it is interesting to think about the potential relocation of this attraction.
If the Laugh Floor does end up moving, that would mean yet another closed building in Tomorrowland. Currently, Tomorrowland Terrace is only open for fireworks dessert parties and is not open for its usual quick-service meal period.
It is hard to believe that another building in Tomorrowland has been sitting abandoned for over seven years. Right across the way from the Laugh Floor was Stitch’s Great Escape, which closed in 2018. Since nothing has been put in its place, we have our fingers crossed that Disney is planning to use this location for a new attraction or meet and greet location if a Tomorrowland refurb is in the works.
As we mentioned, the future has come, and unfortunately, that means that Tomorrowland is no longer the land of tomorrow. While we love taking a spin on the PeopleMover and the Carousel of Progress, the land needs a new spark. Yes, TRON Lightcycle / Run just opened in 2023, but the land as a whole needs some help.
While we think it is time for a Tommorowland refurb, we, unfortunately, don’t think we will get this announcement anytime soon as Magic Kingdom will be construction-filled over the next few years as other projects are completed. If Tomorrowland were to close during the construction that is already planned in and near Frontierland, it would be a crowd nightmare as so many attractions would be closed.
So, while we don’t think the Tomorrowland refurb will happen anytime soon and Disney has not announced anything, we believe these three clues point to the potential overhaul of Tomorrowland once projects like the Cars expansion and Villains Land are completed. Those new lands will be able to absorb a lot of the crowds and it won’t hit wait times as hard if they do choose to close part or all of Tomorrowland for a refurb!

I agree (and hope) with you that a Tomorrowland refurb is coming. There isn’t too much we’d want to specifically see go, although we’d love to see at least significant changes to the Speedway and Space Mountain. I don’t like Space Mountain because it is too jarring, and my son who is ‘only’ about 6 feet tall is very uncomfortable on the ride from a height perspective. I know that Disney has wanted to get rid of Carousel of Progress in the past, but we love it, and it can absorb a lot of people into a small space. There are no other spaces like it in MK – indoors, a decent break off your feet, and almost constantly ‘boarding.’ I guess Small World comes close, but I bet SW’s footprint is biggger, and I bet CoP gives it a run for the money in numbers of people it can accomodate at once. Not to mention, we love the story and that it’s original Walt Disney history! Maybe its days as a Tomorroland attraction should be numbered, but it should live on somewhere. If the Carousel goes, and the Speedway in particular survives as-is, I’m not sure my Disney loyalty can survive that. It’s taken too many hits over the past few years.

Still think the Rivers project is a big mistake. Cars should be in Hollywood Studios with Monsters. Creating many bad feelings with Magic Kingdom fans. Sad this vision is so blurry and short sighted.

Hmm, my bet it’s an advertisement so people get in the app to find it, notice it’s in MK and add days in to trips or book future ones, park hop…😆

I agree! It’s definitely Tomorrowland’s turn for some updates.
Disney, if you see this (😂), here are my suggestions…
Keep Space Mountain (she’s a classic!), Buzz is great, but needs some updates, make Astro Orbitors into something that can accommodate more riders at one time, replace the Tomorrowland Speedway (preferably with something that won’t give me a headache from gas fumes 😂), put some new attractions/meet & greets in the empty buildings, COP should stay the same (also a classic!) and don’t you dare mess with my People Mover! Unless you want to make it more accessible, I’d be ok with that!
I also think TL could use some new dining options! Maybe even a table service spot. Perhaps a themed restroom?? You know, like the Tangled one, but maybe Stitch themed or something
Just a few suggestions 🤣
